Summary

This position is budgeted for $16.40/hour.

This is a PARS (Public Agency Retirement System) budgeted position and is limited to 999 hours per fiscal year. This is not a PERS eligible position.

Escondido Recreation is looking for dynamic individuals that are passionate about working with youth in the City’s 2023-2024 Before & After School Program. If you enjoy engaging youth in learning, active play, and mentoring opportunities, this is the perfect job for you! Recreation Leaders are responsible for the supervision of the students and implementation of curriculum, while maintaining a safe and fun environment. Interest and knowledge in the following areas is highly desirable: sports, arts & crafts, tutoring, and clubs. The programs are located at Bernardo, LR Green, Miller, North Broadway, and Reidy Creek Elementary Schools within the Escondido Union School District (EUSD). Available openings include multiple positions for the afternoon (2:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m., 1:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. on Thursdays) and morning (6:15 a.m. - 8:15 a.m., with opportunities to substitute in the afternoon) shifts, Monday - Friday during school days only.

Key responsibilities:
  • Promote a safe and positive environment for all participants
  • Implement the day-to-day operations of the Before & After School Program which include, but are not limited to recreational play, enrichment activities, and academic time
  • Supervise and maintain a staff to student ratio of 20:1
  • Monitor and correct participant behavior as needed and prepare and write a variety of reports and documentation
  • Ensure the designated classroom is maintained in a clean and orderly manner
  • Attend all designated meetings and trainings
  • Assist students with homework and other academic needs
  • All other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate for this position will:
  • Enjoy working with youth, be energetic, self-motivated, and team orientated
  • Be able to effectively plan, lead, and execute daily lesson plans
  • Learn and apply prevention methods, enforce safety rules, and maintain constant attention to assigned areas
  • Have excellent oral and written skills to communicate with participants, parents, staff, and school faculty
  • Provide high quality customer service
  • Have the ability to work with a diverse group of children
  • Have a specialty skill (science, technology, art, music, etc.) to develop and/or enhance lesson plans
  • Have an intended career path of teaching or related field.

Minimum requirements:
  • 16 years of age at the time of employment
  • Reliable transportation to and from assigned school site
  • First Aid and CPR Certification, Mandated Reporter and City-Span Lite Training within 30-days of employment
  • Must pass Highly Qualified Instructional Assistant Exam from EUSD or have completed 48 college units
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly desirable

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Applications will be screened and the most qualified candidates will be invited to appear for testing. All positions require the ability to read, write and speak English. Types of tests may include written and/or oral examination, physical agility, practical exam or other appropriate job-related selection process. When testing is completed, candidates will be ranked on an eligibility list in the order of their test score. Selection for appointments is made from names certified on the eligibility list.

All appointments are subject to the successful completion of background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting, and will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. Qualification by a medical examination will be required at the time of appointment. After appointment, classified employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period to be eligible for regular status. In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must produce proof of eligibility to work in the United States within the first three days of their employment. The City of Escondido participates in E-Verify®.

The Loyalty Oath will be administered to all new employees on their first day of hire. New employees hired into positions that require a driver's license must provide proof of a valid California Driver's License of the appropriate class level on their first day of employment.
