Job Description

The Missouri State Public Defender is an agency dedicated to providing legal representation to individuals who are unable to afford an attorney in criminal cases. We are committed to upholding the constitutional right to counsel and ensuring fair and just legal proceedings for all citizens.

You will gain knowledge of the criminal justice system and provide assistance to public defender clients by working with attorneys in trial, appellate, juvenile, and capital offices throughout the state.

Positions available statewide. 33 trial offices located throughout Missouri. Appellate and Capital positions available in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Columbia. Paid opportunities are only available in rural locations that do not include Kansas City, Columbia or St. Louis. Opportunities in those locations would be volunteer or for externship credit.

Remote internship opportunities are available in a limited number of locations.

  • Assist with client and witness interviews.
  • Assist with and observe preliminary hearings, trials, motions, and other aspects of litigation.
  • Research case law for attorneys.
  • Prepare motions.
  • Serve subpoenas.
  • Aassume related responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Currently Enrolled in Law School as a 1st or 2nd year student
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Interest in Criminal Law
  • Legal Research and Writing Skills
  • Analytical and Critical Thinking Skills
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), Microsoft Office Suite, and other legal software tools
