Job Description

DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, to perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance of landscaped areas throughout the city including various tasks, from cultivating, planting, harvesting, feeding, and pruning plants, to treating plants that might be infested with pests or infected with a disease, and additional duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Assist in the maintenance of grounds, City facilities, and related areas.
  • Assist in the planting, transplanting, removing, fertilizing, cultivating, and watering of flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • Program, monitor, and adjust drip irrigation systems to ensure plant health
  • Participate in landscape construction.
  • Pruning of trees.
  • Assist in the installation and repair of sprinkling and drip irrigation systems.
  • Operate vehicles, power equipment, hedge clippers, and related grounds and park maintenance equipment.
  • Keep tools and equipment in clean and safe working condition.
  • Respond to emergency calls after normal duty hours.
  • Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  • Landscaping, plants, and their care
  • Pruning of trees and plants
  • Methods, tools, techniques, and supplies used in the development and maintenance of landscaped areas.
  • Basic characteristics of health/disease in soil, plants, and trees
  • Sprinkler and drip system use and maintenance.
  • Safe work practices.


Ability to:
  • Perform a wide variety of landscaping work.
  • Operate hand and power tools and equipment required in general landscaping work.
  • Perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Accommodate outside work in extreme weather conditions.


Experience and Education:

Any combination of experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to obtain working knowledge of plants, soil, and cultivation.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License;
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency call-outs;
  • Possession of CPR for infant, child and adult, and Standard First Aid Certificates within twelve months of appointment;
  • Possession of a State of California Pesticide Applications certificate preferred.


SELECTION PROCEDURE

This process may include a variety of techniques designed to test applicants’ knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job. An eligibility list will be established by ranking candidates by their overall score and a selection will be made from the candidates on this list.
