The City of Galveston’s Information Technology Department is seeking a motivated career- and customer-oriented Senior Systems Administrator that will support the city’s information technology needs. This on-site role’s job duties will include but not be limited to system/server administration, hardware infrastructure, storage area networks, active directory management, and handle projects related to data center management, cybersecurity, and disaster recovery. Support is provided to all lines of business for the city, addressing both internal and external system requirements. This role is an emergency essential position that will require, at various times, after hours and weekend work. This role will report to the Infrastructure and Security Director and does not have any direct supervisory responsibilities.

General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer a hybrid on-premises and cloud environment.
  • Critically evaluate changes and understand their impact on stakeholders and networked environment.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve problems affecting operating systems, network hardware, and related components.
  • Prepare and present technical documentation and presentations both orally and in writing to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to support staff as needed.
  • Evaluate new technologies and provide recommendations on technical solutions.
  • Apply quality assurance testing concepts and methodologies, constructing comprehensive test plans based on a thorough understanding of business requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Required Technical Skills
  • Have a solid understanding of Administration of Microsoft Server systems, VMWare, Storage Area Networks, Cloud environments, and core networking fundamentals (Firewall and Switching).
  • Be proficient with Active Directory, Federated Services, Group Policy, SSO, MFA, DNS, DHCP, SSH, etc.
  • Having a good understanding of cyber security best practices, knowledge and experience with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework is a plus.
  • Ability to configure, maintain, and troubleshoot SANs, HBAs, fiber channel switches, fiber cables, SATA drives, and associated firmware and software.
  • Ability to install and maintain wireless access points and associated wireless equipment.
  • Ability to forecast capacity needs for current and future state infrastructure, high availability environments, as well as disaster recovery.
  • Ability to manage and maintain network monitoring solutions.
  • The ability to author scripts in PowerShell and/or python is a plus.
  • Proficiency in creating network documentation with MS Visio
    Educational & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or an IT related discipline or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience (5 years’ minimum).
  • Seven (7+) plus years’ in designing, supporting, and maintaining complex network environments.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with professional certifications in networking, Microsoft, Linux, and Security
  • ITIL training would be an asset.
