Job Description

Title: Substitute Custodian

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed for a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year, with the possibility of renewal if funds and/or program needs exist.

This is an hourly intermittent appointment and shall not exceed one thousand (1000) hours worked in any given fiscal year. No probationary period. No permanent status is granted.

Classification Salary Range:

The salary range for this classification is $3,505 - $4,715 monthly.

The anticipated hiring amount for this position is $21/hr.

About the Department/Position:

Physical Plant is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, repair and upkeep of State-owned and operated buildings and grounds, totaling in excess of 920,785 gross square feet of building space and 346 acres of grounds, 40% in active use. Its mission is to provide an aesthetically appealing, well-maintained, and safe and comfortable physical environment conducive to learning and working.

Under the immediate supervision of the Manager, Custodial Services, the Substitute Custodians provide general cleaning and custodial care and support for assigned campus buildings, facilities, structures, and adjacent areas and/or portions thereof, including, but not limited to, campus offices, classrooms, science laboratories, art rooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, locker rooms, health, and child care centers, student residences, patios, entryways, walkways, and workshops; participate in campus event set-up and clean up including moving bleachers; load and unload cleaning supplies and materials.

**May operate motor vehicles such as a truck or electric cart which will require the successful candidate(s} to have a valid driver's license.
**The successful candidate{s} will be required to take and pass a physical exam.

Valid CA Driver's license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written directions
  • Ability to use and care for custodial supplies and equipment
  • Ability to observe and use safe working conditions.
  • Have a general knowledge of methods, materials, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and working knowledge of safety and sanitation measures appropriate for custodial work.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations where required and also be able to perform job duties in a manner that is highly service-oriented
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Working Material:

The position activities may require the use of machinery, tools, vehicles, or office equipment:

All types of vacuum cleaners, wet vacuums, high-speed buffers, manual floor machines, automatic floor machines, carpet cleaning equipment, trucks and/or electric carts, restroom paper towels, soap dispensers, and chemicals.

Responsibilities
  • Cleans and maintains assigned campus-wide buildings and performs
  • Gather and deliver recyclables to areas of central aggregation
  • Load and unload cleaning supplies and materials.
  • Assists with moving tables, chairs, other furniture, and equipment
  • Makes minor building maintenance repairs and adjustments in laboratories and classrooms
  • Assists in setting up, which may include moving bleachers, and preparing for campus-wide events, e.g., Honors Convocation, annual graduation ceremonies, etc.

General Information:
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • Employment is contingent upon the candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up in excess of 50 lbs.
