Additional responsibilities include: develop and maintain a tracking database and proper documentation of all correspondence, consultations, Federal and State notices, inventories, summaries and determinations regarding cultural affiliation, repatriation, or disposition; develop a NAGPRA website for Cal State LA; identify and apply for grants to support the repatriation process for Native American tribal communities for their travel and expenses; facilitate the transmittal of collections’ documents to tribal communities; and remain current on NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA legislation and regulations. Required Qualifications & Experience : A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies, Historic Preservation, or other related field. The incumbent must have administrative experience, including supervising staff and project/program management; experience establishing goals and workload priorities and following tasks through to successful completion; and working with Federally and non-Federally recognized tribes, preferably California Native American Tribes. Policies Studies, analyzes, evaluates, develops, and improves campus-wide administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs related to collections management, NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA compliance, AB 389, and AB 52 consultation responsibilities. Collaborates with different divisions and offices, including University Facilities, Operations, and the Cultural Resources Management Team that is managed by the Anthropology Program and housed within the Office of the President. Act as liaison with campus constituents to ensure compliance and accountability based on current and ever changing NAGPRA policies and University and Tribal needs. Lead CI as campus designee in CSU NAGPRA Coordinators group. Prepares and provides updates and routine and ad hoc reports for campus leadership on progress, successes and barriers to support program goals, transparency and compliance; drafts external communication and reports in coordination with the President's Designee and faculty coordinators, including an annual affirmation and inventory of NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA repatriation efforts; and assist with preparing and submitting NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA compliance documents. Collections Rehouses, manages, and compiles documentation of campus archaeological collections in collaboration with Anthropology and other academic program personnel to create and maintain accurate centralized inventories. Leads cultural resources survey of academic programs on a yearly basis and maintains records of results. Develops and improves upon collections management strategies and reviews and implements best practices. Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the collections' storage and curational facility and continued respectful curation of collections as needed. Develop and coordinate policies and ethical strategies for University Facilities and Campus Cultural Resources Management Team collaborations related to cultural heritage materials management during CSUCI’s continued infrastructure growth and development. Tribal Partnerships Establishes and maintains working relationships with tribal communities including culturally respectful and appropriate guidelines issued by tribal nations and/of their official designees of record. Undertakes proactive, ethical, and sensitive engagement with tribes. Facilitates tribal and campus access to collections, and the repatriation of any ancestral and cultural remains as deemed necessary via consultation with tribes. Communications Represents the University as the lead NAGPRA staff at regular meetings with tribal government officials and representatives to coordinate NAGPRA compliance, address tribal concerns, and negotiate culturally sensitive resolutions as needed. Represents the University at CSU NAGPRA Coordinator’s meetings. Collaboratively works with the campus Tribal Liaison, President’s Designee, President’s Chumash Advisory Council (PCAC), and the Anthropology program. Serves on and assists in facilitating the PCAC, and creates and maintains the campus NAGPRA website. Assists with writing grant proposals, online informational materials, and other messaging as needed. Education and Outreach Maintains regular communications and collaborates with community partners such as museums, State Parks, and other agencies and organizations regarding best practices and mutually beneficial opportunities. Creates and implements educational outreach and training programs with community partners. Engages in educational opportunities with academic programs when possible and conducts cultural heritage compliance-focused training as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Native American Studies, Historic Preservation, Museum Studies, History (with Native California experience), or an allied field required. Experience: At least two cumulative years of experience related to project/program management and working with archaeological and cultural materials. Experience engaging in genuine tribal consultation and recognition of tribal sovereignty, deep understanding of tribal history, and working with and building partnerships with Native American communities, with a preference for experience working with California Native American tribes and tribal communities. Other Knowledge/Skills: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing including communication relating to legislative matters. Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and supervisory staff at all levels of the organization. Skill in developing a rapport with a diverse group of individuals and organizations. Knowledge of community and corporate outreach concepts, principles, methodology, and techniques. Policy development experience. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Familiarity with budget preparation and management. Employee development and performance management skills highly desirable. Experience with Microsoft Suite Programs. Repetitive movements including pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, crouching, regularly lifting and moving materials up to 40 lbs., and the use of push carts. Travel may be required with advance notice when possible. Occasional early morning, late evening, and/or weekend hours may be required with advanced notice when possible. Must possess a valid CA Driver License or be able to obtain one within three months of date of hire.
