THE POSITION Under the supervision of sworn Police personnel, the Police Cadet performs a variety of routine and progressively difficult police clerical and technical support duties in the areas including, but not limited to: lobby reception, records, crime prevention, patrol, traffic, and property control. DEFINITION Under direct supervision, performs assignments restricted to non-enforcement police-related functions, assists police officers in non-hazardous duties, performs communications duties, processes prisoners and performs related clerical duties. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Police Cadet is a non-sworn training classification used to introduce and prepare an individual for a potential career in law enforcement. Incumbents may be assigned to any shift including nights, weekends and holidays. Scheduled work hours will not conflict with class schedules. Work days and hours will be assigned so the Cadet has adequate time to devote to his or her education. Incumbents attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Upon successful completion of the required P.O.S.T. training within the required time frame and the discretion of management, the Police Officer Cadet may be appointed to the classification of Police Officer (Class Code 8350) on a probationary basis. The primary responsibility of the Cadet is to attend the prescribed training sessions to learn the principles, practices and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement and codified and case law. The cadet also receives training in report writing, physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, and arrest and control techniques. Under close supervision, the Cadet may assist other police officers in the performance of their duties.
