This position will work under the general supervision of the State Park Superintendent II. The incumbent is responsible for providing Public Safety at the Hungry Valley Sector within the Great Basin District. This position reports directly to the Assistant Chief Ranger and, in his/her absence, may act on his/her behalf. This position is responsible for a portion of the Visitor Services program within the Hungry Valley Sector. This position works in conjunction with another SPPOS to supervise State Park Peace Officers, assist with the Special Event program, coordinate the Lifeguard/EMR program and supervise seasonal Park Aids. The incumbent shall be familiar with protocol, procedures, polices and regulations pertaining to the California State Parks. The incumbent is responsible for public protection and law enforcement, interpretation, emergency medical services, and resource protection. This position may also be required to provide coverage to other locations or events throughout the District. This position may also be required to assist the Off Highway Motor Vehicle Division with special assignments throughout California, based on operational need. This position will work under the general supervision of the State Park Superintendent II. Position responsibilities are to provide response in emergency/law enforcement situations, provide public assistance to park visitors as needed and supervise the Auburn SRA Visitor Services/Aquatics Programs. The incumbent will also supervise accident scenes as appropriate, render first aid and ensure that injured parties are treated in accordance with Department policy and protocols. The duties will also require the incumbent to provide direction to State Park Peace Officers during rescues, citations and arrests and will also be the direct supervisory liaison for various community organizations, associations and volunteer groups. The incumbent will participate in the preparation of monthly and daily work schedules; evaluate subordinates; assist with career planning, training requests and other personnel matters as requested. Working Conditions This position will require the incumbent to work in all types of inclement weather with temperatures ranging from the low 30s to the low 100s. The park terrain consists of steep canyons with thick forest and underbrush that includes poison oak. Many trails are narrow with steep drop offs. Ticks and rattlesnakes inhabit the canyon. The incumbent will be involved in the whitewater rafting patrol program and lifeguard program which includes rafting or training in up to class 5 whitewater. Job Description and Duties LIFEGUARD I (SEASONAL) - INLAND EMPIRE DISTRICT / SILVERWOOD LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKS program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKS recipient in the comments area on the application. The Lifeguard I (Seasonal) reporting location is Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, 14651 Cedar Circle, Hesperia, CA, 92345. The Seasonal Lifeguard I works under the immediate supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger) and under the direction of the Seasonal Lifeguard II, Lifeguard P.I., or on-duty State Park Peace Officer. The Inland Empire District consists of Lake Perris State Recreation Area, Chino Hills State Park, California Citrus State Historic Park, Mount San Jacinto State Park, Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, Providence Mountain State Park, San Timoteo Canyon State Park, and Wildwood Canyon State Park. All parks listed are managed by a State Park Superintendent V and further organized into the following functions: Visitor Services, Aquatic Services, Maintenance Services, and Administrative Services. Peak season dates are May 1 st through September 30 th and Seasonal Lifeguards are expected to work most weekends and holidays during this timeframe. This position is intermittent and may work up to 189 days in a 12-month period. Schedules are written monthly, and hours vary based on operational need. If hired, Seasonal Lifeguards will complete a paid 80-hour training program before being assigned to lifeguard duties. This training program will start on June 9 th , 2024. Training will be held at Lake Perris State Recreation Area. This position requires a valid California class ‘C’ driver’s license. Applicants must be 16 years or older by the start of Lifeguard training and must have a valid California driver’s license by June 1, 2024. Applicants must also have a social security card.
