Every year, the department manages numerous capital, construction, paving, and road safety improvement projects. Bridge Workers are part of a collaborative crew that works together to improve our community through the construction, repair, and maintenance of bridges, culverts, catch basins, viaducts, curbs, gutters, and other related timber, concrete, and steel structures. The ideal Bridge Worker has a collaborative work style with a focus on safety and two or more years of experience: Constructing, repairing, and maintaining bridges, cattle guards, guardrails, steel ties, and walls Preparing foundations for bridge footing and abutments, constructing sack walls, and rip rapping Operating air compressor, cutting torch, and sandblasting equipment Safely working around or operating and maintaining various heavy equipment Although not required, highly desirable certifications include Articulating Boom Crane (ABC), Articulating Boom Crane with Winch (ABW), Articulating Boom Loaders (ABL), Crane Operator, Lattice Boom Truck (LBT), Rigger 1, Signalman 1, Shielded Metal Arc Welding/Stick Welding, Arc Structural Welding, and use and inspection of Fall Protection for bridge maintenance activities. Possession of a valid Class A driver's license is also highly desired. Please note: this position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled bridge maintenance and construction tasks for extended periods of time. Additionally, the responsibilities of the Bridge Worker position require incumbents to be available for after-hours emergency response and work near moving traffic and in all weather conditions, including rain, cold, and heat, and next to fumes, dust, and in proximity to other air contaminants which may cause eye and skin irritation. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive a motorized vehicle. Under the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing if they operate vehicles and/or equipment which require DOT testing. This recruitment is being conducted to fill a Bridge Worker position in SoCoPi, formerly the Transportation and Public Works Department. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Normally this would include: Education and Experience: Two years experience in the construction or maintenance of wooden or concrete structures, including carpentry and welding experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of: methods, materials, safety practices, and tools used in the construction and maintenance of bridges; techniques and methods used in welding; safe operation of pile driver, crane and backhoe. Ability to: perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled bridge maintenance and construction tasks for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions; perform construction work in concrete, steel, and wood; weld; safely operate heavy equipment; read and write English; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work effectively with others; demonstrate physical strength, endurance and mechanical aptitude; work suspended or on scaffolding above ground.
