Description Hours worked per week may vary This is an excellent part-time job opportunity for an individual to provide staff support and customer service to patrons of the City of Huntington Beach libraries within the Community & Library Services Department. The Community & Library Services Department includes Administration, Facilities & Events, Programs & Services, and Library & Cultural Services. This position will be located at Central Library, Adult Literacy Services. The ideal candidate must possess effective and cooperative communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to relate to a diverse group of people. The incumbent will be comfortable with using PC compatible computers and have familiarity with Microsoft Office and is willing to learn new software. This is a part-time, on-call position. The hours are on a set weekly schedule; however, the incumbent must be flexible to work on-call, evenings, and weekends. Note: This recruitment may close at any time, and will close as soon as the hiring manager determines that enough qualified applications have been received. This is a Non-Perm, Part-Time position. Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 - June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice. Further restrictions apply to CalPERS Annuitants. Examples of Essential Duties Assists the Literacy staff with literacy-related tasks. Tasks may include: Staffing the office in absence of coordinator Answering phones Maintaining contact with tutors and adults learners via phone and/or email Assisting literacy volunteers and adult literacy students with materials and tutoring sessions Working on various projects for the literacy program (mailings, making phone calls, preparing educational material or flyers, drafting articles for literacy newsletter) Maintaining collection of tutoring materials Assist with tutor and learner meetings Conducting outreach for literacy volunteers and adult students Assisting with record keeping on tutors/learners matches, attendance logs, fundraising, etc. May open or close the literacy office depending on the assigned shift. The preceding duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of works performed within this job assignment. The City, at its discretion, may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: Modern office procedures, methods, computer equipment and software; methods and techniques of proper telephone etiquette; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; basic mathematical principles; customer service principles and practices. Ability to: Learn to correctly interpret and apply City policies and procedures; perform general clerical work including maintaining files and compiling information for reports; type and/or enter data at a speed necessary for successful job performance; effectively respond to requests and inquiries from the general public and City staff; operate and use modern office equipment including computer; learn to use various software packages including Microsoft Office Suite; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; deliver quality customer service. Education and Experience: Equivalent to a high school diploma and three (3) years of related experience. The SALARY RANGE is composed of seven steps. Merit step increases are based on satisfactory performance.
