Replaces a variety of interior and exterior body parts, including bumpers, doors, glass, fareboxes, bicycle racks and body panels. Repairs and paints both internal and exterior body panels. Performs bus exchanges and road calls. Performs repairs on vehicles in the field, as required. Completes vehicle service requests, lists work performed on work order forms, and indicates additional repairs, if needed. Maintains paper and electronic records of repairs and maintenance. Performs bumper-to-bumper repairs on various emergency vehicles, as assigned. Troubleshoots and repairs fire apparatus including pumps, valves, controls, piping, hydraulic and electrical systems. Performs cutting and welding. Fabricates and installs a variety of parts and equipment. Ensures that complete chassis, engines and components are pressure-washed and shop work areas are cleaned in accordance with mechanic shop standards. Follows applicable safety rules and regulations. College level or vocational school coursework may not substitute for the required work experience. General The Mechanic ‘B’ reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and Lead Mechanic, and is responsible for performing mechanic work which includes disassembly, diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repair work on transit buses, non-revenue vehicles, and other maintenance shop equipment on District property in support of public transportation services for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans). Perform computer-related functions on vehicle sub-systems that allow for data input, retrieval, diagnostics, and repairs. Provide guidance and/or assistance to other mechanics including on the proper use of equipment and performing their mechanical duties. Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one’s self, fellow employees, District property, and the public from injury or harm. Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent. Three (3) years of full-time experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive, transit, gasoline, diesel, or hybrid vehicles. Must possess a valid Class C California driver license with a safe driving record, and must be able to obtain a Class B permit with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsements within seven days of hire. Must be able to work different shifts at any of two District operated facilities (North Base - South San Francisco and South Base - San Carlos), including nights, weekends, and holidays. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Able to obtain a 608 and 609 Air Conditioning Certification prior to completing probation (120 Days). Able to effectively follow oral and written instructions. Inspects, locates, and diagnoses mechanical and/or electrical defects on County trucks, a variety of light and heavy maintenance and construction equipment, and busses; determines extent of necessary repairs; overhauls, repairs, and adjusts transmissions, differentials, air brakes, hydraulic systems, clutches, and engines; tunes-up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems; replaces and repairs faulty parts, including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and other components; works on generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; changes and installs belts and hoses; maintains time and materials records for work orders; changes tires; orders and maintains inventory of requisite parts and supplies; carries out preventive maintenance programs; may weld and fabricate parts and equipment; may make field and emergency repairs; installs emergency warning equipment; may road test repaired equipment, may operate a special fueling station and transit facility, may assist with planning new equipment procurement. Minimum Qualifications Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
