Interacts and works closely with the general public to gather fisheries-related data, provide information and/or conduct outreach. Responsible for maintaining equipment and facilities. Operates boats, motors and other fisheries sampling equipment. Fabricates special equipment needed for fisheries projects. Completes routine administrative paperwork. NOTE: This position is for a technician in the TPWD Inland Fisheries office in San Antonio. The San Antonio office is responsible for managing fisheries in the San Antonio and South Texas areas including Lake Amistad and Falcon Lake, which have consistently been nationally recognized by B.A.S.S. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES : Fish and Wildlife Technician I-II Knowledge of basic principles and techniques related to river access such as evaluating slope, access trails, and site conditions; Knowledge of aquatic flora and fauna; Knowledge of boating and water access safety practices; Knowledge of basic mechanics, carpentry, and fabrication; Fish and Wildlife Technician III Knowledge of FWT I-II, PLUS: Knowledge of environmental regulations and best management practices related to river conservation; Knowledge of the flora and fauna specifically of freshwater aquatic and riparian Texas ecosystems; Knowledge of common angler and user survey methods; Knowledge of division and agency policies and procedures; Knowledge of major issues confronting the division and agency; Fish and Wildlife Technician I-II Skill in effective verbal and written communication and building cooperative relationships with co-workers, private landowners, and the public; Skill in effective outreach; Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts; Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook; Skill in maintaining records; Skill in collecting biological and habitat data using a variety of gear types and equipment; Skill in safe operation of paddlecraft, boats, motors and specialized equipment; Skill in operation and routine maintenance of paddlecraft fleet; Skill in making independent, sound, timely decisions; Skill in designing, fabricating, maintaining and/or calibrating, and using specialized sampling, field, and laboratory equipment; Skill in troubleshooting and performing routine maintenance on vehicles; Skill in following TPWD administrative procedures; Fish and Wildlife Technician III Skill of FWT I-II, PLUS: Skill in working as an effective and efficient team leader; Skill in effective interaction with staff at all levels of the department and other state agencies and organizations; Skill in developing written outreach or communications such as social media posts, program and survey summaries, and correspondence; Skill in reviewing and editing technical reports; Skill in instructing others on proper paddlecraft use, maintenance and handling; Skill in coordinating large multi-disciplinary groups in field-based surveys or paddling trips; Fish and Wildlife Technician I-II Ability to provide assistance and information in a courteous and helpful manner; Ability to work as a member of a team; Ability to follow written and verbal instructions; Ability to operate and maintain small boats and paddlecraft used in rivers and streams; Ability to participate in field work including biological and habitat data collections; Ability to identify species of fish and other aquatic organisms; Ability to perform basic maintenance and repairs on equipment and facilities; Ability to back and pull a trailer; Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather; Ability to participate in water-based field work; Ability to assess and mitigate risks associated with river access sites; Ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines; Ability to troubleshoot problems and find practical solutions in a variety of situations; Ability to learn new skills, techniques, and procedures; Ability to design and fabricate small projects needed for river access sites; Ability to perform manual labor including lifting up to 50 lbs.; Ability to maintain good work habits which include being efficient, reliable and highly motivated; Ability to perform work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program; Fish and Wildlife Technician III Ability of FWT I-II, PLUS: Ability to motivate team members, provide guidance and direction to achieve program goals; Ability to provide clear verbal and written instructions and information to river users about safety guidelines and regulations; Ability to interact with staff at all levels of the department and other state agencies and organizations in a professional manner; Ability to instruct others, particularly in safe operation and handling of paddlecraft and in recommendations for river access site improvements; Ability to complete administrative programmatic functions, as directed; Ability to use MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint to effectively convey information about river access programs and survey results; Ability to coordinate with external organizations and/or agencies on project proposals, plans and specifications; Ability to work independently with little or no supervision. WORKING CONDITIONS : Required to work flexible hours with night and weekend hours; Required to travel throughout the state with possible overnight stays; Required to perform job assignments in inclement weather; Required to conduct water-based sampling activities; Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures; May be required to operate a State vehicle; Required to travel 40% with possible overnight stays; Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
