MISSION To advance the health of our patients and our communities by providing extraordinary care Positions allocable to this class are assigned to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and work under the administrative direction of supervising nurse-midwives and the medical direction of physicians. These positions are responsible within legal restrictions and agency policy for managing normal pregnancy cases by providing complete care through the full cycle of antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal. The Nurse-Midwife exercises independent judgment in determining whether the mother and fetus are progressing within normal limits of obstetrical and gynecological practice or whether a patient's condition requires referral to a physician. Essential Job Functions Reviews patient's chart and searches for abnormalities which would indicate other than prediction of a normal birth. Obtains patient's medical history and performs an evaluative obstetrical examination including taking vital signs, checking neurological reflexes, listening to fetal heartbeat, taking external measurements of the uterus, locating the position of the fetus and estimating its size and weight, and examining breasts and nipples. Performs internal pelvic examination to determine extent of dilation, station and position of the fetus and general condition of the membranes. Interprets the results of each element of the obstetrical examination with normal ranges and determines whether consultation with a physician is indicated. Draws blood and completes routine laboratory request forms. Performs hematocrit analysis by centrifuging blood sample, examining with a microscope and recording the results for review by a physician. Functions under standing orders by a physician when patient is admitted for delivery and manages the patient during labor, starting IVs, administering medications, prepping the patient, instructing the patient in labor procedures, giving supportive counseling to the patient, maintaining surveillance of progress in labor and keeping the physician informed of progress or impending problems. With indications of impending delivery, notifies a physician and transfers the patient to the delivery room. Assists the patient in the delivery room by giving emotional support to the patient and performs delivery procedures including pudendal block, episiotomy and repairs and resuscitation of the newborn. Makes periodic postpartum visits to the mother and baby to evaluate condition and progress and to instruct the mother in recuperative procedures and baby care. Participates in the informal training of nurses and students and refresher program for nurse-midwives. Provides gynecological care to normal women under medical direction including the performance of pelvic examinations for cancer and other abnormalities and referral of problems to physicians. Provides direct family planning services such as fitting diaphragms and intrauterine devices and dispenses oral contraceptives. Counsels and provides referrals regarding family planning. Identifies basic to complex medical conditions; determines if patient's medical, surgical and psychiatric problems require immediate consultations with the physician; treats conditions and manages stable phases of chronic illnesses on consultations with or following specific protocols established by physicians, including dispensing and/or administering medication when indicated; alerts appropriate medical agencies of potential community health problems as encountered. Provides routine prenatal care and postpartum follow-up for mothers; provides comprehensive health screening assessments; provides treatment of illness. Admits/evaluates clients in Family Maternity Center; independently manages clients or co-manages with attending physician, clients who may be at higher risk. Independently attends deliveries of these clients, manages second, third and fourth stages of labor. Refers clients outside scope of practice. Discharges both antepartum and postpartum clients independently. Observes and counsels and supports patients in the area of psychosocial problems and inter-relationships; provides emergency treatment or referral for patients with severe emotional upsets. May work in clinics; may make home and school visits; may lead ancillary clinic staff; may coordinate clinic activities; may orient and oversee nursing students, nurse midwifery students, medical students and other providers. Provides for quality assurance through review and audit of clinic charts to assure adequate medical management and follow-up; provides consultation to other providers. Keeps records and completes form, questionnaires and billing forms as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education : Completion of an approved nurse midwife educational program recognized by the American College of Nurse Midwives. Must possess a valid California Nurse Midwife furnishing number within one year of appointment to the class of Nurse Midwife. Required Qualifications Knowledge: Knowledge of daily clinic operations; aseptic techniques and requirements; uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above; California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants. General knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned; understand the potential hazards or complications resulting from administering medications and how to initiate emergency procedures. Abilities: Ability to demonstrate the proper techniques in administering medications in a variety of manners including intramuscular, intradermal, or subcutaneous methods and by inhalation; proper techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy; competency in performing assigned medical technical support services such as the standard tests and limited procedures described above; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients. Preferred Qualifications • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment • Experience working with college students, preferably in a higher education setting Special Conditions While Medical Assistants are not certified, registered, or licensed in the State of California, the Medical Board of California requires that medical assistants complete specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in their scope of practice. This training must be documented and a physician or other qualified teacher, as identified by the Medical Board of California, must certify in writing that the Medical Assistant has completed the training successfully. If a Medical Assistant is performing phlebotomy outside the regular scope of practice, appropriate phlebotomy certification may be required by the State of California. Medical Assistants may perform only those duties authorized by their supervising licensed physician and surgeon, a licensed podiatrist, or a physician assistant, nurse practitioner or certified nurse-midwife who, in compliance with applicable state regulations, must be present in the facility when the Medical Assistant is performing specific procedures. Compensation and Benefits: Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,338 - $3,505 per month Classification Salary Range: $3,338 - $5,366 per month The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
