Street Maintenance Worker I The entry-level class of this series that initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in street maintenance, concrete work, and traffic painting and signing work. This class is alternately staffed with Street Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications for the higher-level class. Street Maintenance Worker II The journey-level class of this series, fully competent to perform the full range of street maintenance duties. This class is distinguished from Street Maintenance Worker III which performs the most difficult street maintenance work, including the regular operation of construction equipment. Duties Break and remove surfaces; dig, shovel, haul, load, and unload soils, sand, asphalt mixes, and other materials. Spread, shovel, rake, float, and roll asphalt; repair potholes; clean storm drains; clear brush from catch basins, storm drains and flood channels; build forms and prepare sub-grades. Mix, pour, and finish concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveways; repair private property damaged in the course of the work. Drive heavy trucks to pick up and deliver materials; haul equipment on transporters to and from work sites. Paint traffic control markings and stencils on pavements and curbs using airless spray equipment and brushes. Install traffic control legends and crosswalks using per-cut tapes; install buttons and reflectors used for lane markers. Fabricate, install, and maintain traffic and other signs according to established standards; install raised traffic bars, guardrails, and reflectors. Read and interpret maps, manuals, and specifications. Maintain the drawbridge, including greasing the bridge, graffiti removal, and replacing boards. Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand and power tools, test equipment, and other equipment related to the work, including jackhammers, concrete saws, tampers, rollers, compressors, generators, spreader boxes, airless spray equipment, heat bonding machines, stripers, etc. Operate a variety of light and heavy trucks used in the work. Observe safe work methods and safety practices related to the work; cone and flag worksites to secure from traffic; use appropriate safety equipment. Inspect vehicles and perform minor maintenance; report the need for major repairs and service; fuel and lubricate vehicles and related equipment; wash and clean assigned vehicles; operate assigned vehicles skillfully and safely; observe safe driving practices. Complete basic records related to work performed; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs; respond to emergency situations in off-hours as required; assist other divisions in maintenance activities as assigned. The incumbent is trained in specific trade tasks which require a broader knowledge in several trades and a basic knowledge of theories, codes, procedures and general trade practices in applicable trade areas. Key Qualifications The abilities of the FW II would normally be acquired through any combination of experience and training equivalent to three years of hands-on experience in general facilities and systems maintenance and repair, or comparable experience as a trades assistant or laborer with demonstrated proficiency in the required duties. The incumbent must be able to operate all applicable tools, equipment and systems and follow standard written instructions and procedures. In addition, the FW II must possess comprehensive knowledge of specific methods, practices and tools related to facilities and systems maintenance and repair in areas such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, painting, lock, and mechanical system and must demonstrate semi-skilled and basic trade proficiency in multiple trades and maintenance tasks. Beginning proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office required. Knowledge of Google Suite, computerized work control system, and PeopleSoft preferred.
