Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to assist with the implementation of signal timing plans and Traffic Management Center (TMC) operations. This is accomplished by evaluating existing timing plans, assisting with developing new signal timing plans, timing log updates, signal system backups, and assisting with inspections of new traffic signals. Other duties include responding to citizen requests regarding traffic issues; reviewing traffic signal plans, sign/pavement marking plans; and performing traffic studies. Work requires knowledge of Tactics signal system software.

Essential Job Functions

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.

This position has responsibilities that require lifting up to 20-50 pounds on occasion, 10-19 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Depending on assignment, this position will:
  • Assist with monitoring the Traffic Management Center operations including overseeing all installations and maintenance; test all equipment for NEMA specifications; diagnose problems; and order and maintain signal inventory supplies.
  • Receive calls and respond to citizen complaints and concerns about signal timing and traffic issues.
  • Control, observe and evaluate traffic by developing, implementing, and adjusting traffic signal timing to improve traffic flow.
  • Assist with the development of new signal timing plans to improve signal operations at an intersection.
  • Assist with signal timing database management by tracking, recording, and organizing traffic signal timing changes.
  • Interface with traffic signal technicians to maintain the traffic signal system.
  • All other duties as assigned by a supervisor/manager within your department/division.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED as minimum. Additional training/coursework above high school level that leads to an appropriate certification from the International Municipal Signal Association.
  • Experience: Minimum two (2) years of experience working in a Traffic Management Center or similar working environment where monitoring of signal operations and signal timing adjustment via signal system software is taking place. Must be familiar with Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
  • Licenses: Valid Driver's License required
  • Certifications Required: IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level 1. IMSA Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Level 1 is required upon hire.
  • Reading: Intermediate ability to read and understand papers, manuals, written directions, policies, etc. Typically this level is obtained in high school up to college.
  • Math: Knowledge of basic math to perform the four basic arithmetic operations, learned in elementary up to high school.
  • Writing: Basic ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Managerial: Within this position, the employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. The employee has some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. The assignment is usually reviewed upon completion.
  • Budget Responsibility: None
  • Supervisory / Organizational Control: Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.
  • Complexity: Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
