Assists in the inspection connected with enforcement of plant pest and agricultural standardization laws by identifying, collecting, and submitting samples of target pests (e.g. inspects, plants, etc.) and properly transport them to laboratories in order to detect invasive pests in a timely manner so that the appropriate response can be taken. Assists in explaining government acts and regulations and the required standards to businesses and homeowners by providing routine policy, procedure, and regulatory information (e.g. verbal, brochures, etc.) in order to verify compliance to agricultural regulatory standards. Assists in trapping insects as part of an infestation detection program by identifying and selecting appropriate host plants for trap placement in residential areas (e.g., park, street, etc.); assembling and baiting a variety of insect traps. Counting and identifying pests in traps in order to protect the environment and agricultural industry. Keeps and collects data from the field and generates inspection reports by preparing daily and monthly activity summary reports; documenting field activity in a written form or electronic software (CalTrap); communicating with supervisors, colleagues and peers to provide information by phone, written form, e-mail, and in-person in order to maintain accurate information and documentation in accordance with the provisions of the department Drives vehicle from site to site to maintain and service traps by driving a vehicle (e.g. truck, etc.) to various inspection sites using a map in order to provide essential work functions. Examples of Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Assist in the examination of fields, roadways, and cultivated areas to determine location and extent of infestation of rodents, weeds, birds, insects or predators, and for presence or extent of plant disease infestation, and assists in their eradication or control. Prepare poison grains for rodent control and its application. Mix restricted and non-restricted pesticides. Enforce quarantine laws relating to the prevention of the introduction or spread of pests, and certifies acceptability or specifies treatment of shipments as a condition of movement. Educate growers/farmers and others involved in use of pesticides. Keep records of inspections and prepares reports. Examine fruits, nuts, vegetables, honey, eggs, and other agricultural commodities in markets, packing houses, and storage areas for compliance with regulations relating to standards, grades, and spray residue. Issue certificates of inspections. Examine plants and trees in nurseries and those arriving or shipped by private or common carrier for evidence of disease, pests of noxious weed seeds, cleanliness and proper labeling. Inspect agricultural commodities being shipped to see that they are free from injurious insects or plant diseases. Assure growers' compliance with laws and regulations concerning pesticides. Issue restricted materials permits to growers. Administer tests to growers for certified/restricted applicator certificates and explains county requirements. Conduct field review and inspection of pesticide use based on crops to be sprayed and drift possibilities to surrounding areas. Interview and conducts fact finding investigations of potential pesticide poisoning/chemical incidents and issues notice of violations if appropriate. Issue permits and supervises the application of toxic materials to crops. Supervise extra help staff and participates in the examination of fruits, nuts, vegetables, honey, eggs, and other agricultural commodities in markets, packing houses, and storage areas for compliance with regulations relating to standards, grades, as outlined in the California Agricultural Code, and spray residue. Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four (4) year college with specialization in one or more appropriate disciplines in agricultural, biological, chemical, or physical sciences, or other appropriate disciplines as determined by the Secretary, California Department of Food and Agriculture. Individuals who apply during the last semester/quarter prior to graduation must satisfy the requirements for graduation within 180 days of appointment. Incumbents who do not complete graduation requirments prior to the end of their probationary period will be terminated. License: Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain. The Position The current vacancy is in Ukiah, CA. Field Inspector will place, replace and check traps in Mendocino County for Pest Detection Contracts. This recruitment is for temporary, non-benefited, extra-help work ONLY . Do not apply if you are not willing to accept temporary, extra-help work. Inspects wine grapes for certification of soluble solids. Inspects and certifies other fruit and vegetable commodities for quality and/or maturity.
