THE POSITION NON-CAREER PART TIME/SEASONAL Employment dates for this position are from May to August 2024 DEFINITION Under general supervision, coordinate and lead activities at Camp Sacramento in the areas of athletics, nature, music, or arts and crafts. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed. Organize and lead hikes for participants in areas surrounding Camp Sacramento. Train staff on hike and trail routes; encourage an appreciation for the environment. Interact positively with elementary aged youth, adolescents, and adults. Lead recreation activities for all ages. Inventory, maintain, clean, and organize recreation and activity supplies and equipment; recommend replacement of supplies and equipment, as necessary. Oversee softball, volleyball, basketball, and other camp team sports; officiate camp athletic events. Organize and oversee tournaments for all ages, such as ping pong, pool, etc. Clean and maintain all athletic facilities and surrounding areas. Assist with the development of arts and crafts activities and lead the instruction of these activities; lead kiln firings. Assist in music related events/shows, camp fires, dances, and movie activities. Oversee auditions and organize acts for camp talent show. Assist Senior Camp Aquatics Leaders during water recreation to include, contacting emergency personnel and senior Camp Sacramento staff during emergency situations; clearing the area for emergency response; maintaining surveillance of the beach and river; and, being alert to signs of distress, or calls for help. Follow all staff policies and procedures. QUALIFICATIONS QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Basic knowledge of Sierra flora and fauna. Arts and crafts. Outdoor safety awareness. Softball, volleyball, basketball, and other team sport rules. Principles of customer service. Ability to: Lead group hikes of various levels of difficulty. Assist with and participate in recreational activities and programs. Be flexible. Speak in front of large groups. Maintain constant focus and observation of an assigned area for persons in distress or hazardous conditions and take appropriate action. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Read, write, and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Experience: Three (3) months of experience leading recreation activities. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Assignment Areas: Nature Previous classroom or daycare experience is strongly recommended for this assignment area. Arts and Crafts A strong customer service and/or teaching background is desirable. Music and Campfire. Guitar skills and vocal ability are required. Possession of peer leadership, stage presence, and public speaking skills are important for successful performance in this assignment area. Age: Must be at least 18 years old by time of appointment. Youth Sports Coaches and Officials provide instruction and officiating in ball hockey, basketball, indoor soccer, tee ball, baseball, softball, flag football and volleyball. Sports Field Maintenance staff assist in the lining, marking, measuring and preparation of sports fields for game day activities. YOUTH SPORTS (Coaches, Officials, and Sports Field Management) The Youth Sports Program is offered year-round for youth ages 5 to 14. Our program focuses on developing fundamentals and good sportsmanship. Sets goals and establishes plans to continue to grow participation in the Dodgers Dreamteam program with a specific focus on girls, teens and Black youth. THE PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
The Parks & Recreation Department, led by a Director and one Assistant Director consists of 6 divisions: Administration, Aquatics, Special Events and Park Permitting, Youth Programs, and two Recreation Center Divisions (Demuth Park and Desert Highland Park). The department is responsible for a broad portfolio including 11 parks, 6 facilities, including a Skate Park and Swim Center, two Golf Courses, hiking trails, and supports year-round special events such as the weekly VillageFest street market, the annual Festival of Lights Parade and Veterans Day Parade. The department is poised to provide its services with a FY25 operating budget of $15.9 million and 43 FTE employees, plus 30 seasonal employees.
THE POSITION
The Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation is an executive, at-will position that reports to the Director of Parks & Recreation. The Assistant Director will supervise staff and work closely and strategically with the Director supporting diverse public-facing projects and programs to advance the mission of the highly regarded Department of Parks & Recreation. The Assistant Director shall have the professional poise to act as the Director in their absence and exercise a high-level of political acumen. Key responsibilities include preparation of reports and presentations detailing public placemaking strategies and objectives to build strong communities through people, parks, and programs; comprehensive park and public space planning; project management of capital improvement projects in parks and recreational facilities; and annual department budgeting and financial reporting.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and creative service-oriented leader that has high-level managerial or executive experience in the public sector; a proven track record of successfully delivering projects in public spaces; is a skilled communicator, able to deliver polished written products and visual presentations; and has a foundational understanding of municipal ordinances, codes, processes, and systems.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The hiring range for the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation is up to $143,916 dependent on qualifications. In addition, an excellent executive benefit package is provided including retirement through CalPERS. Classic CalPERS members are eligible for the 2% @ 60 formula with an employee contribution of 7%, while PEPRA members are eligible for the 2% @ 62 formula with an employee contribution of 8.75%.
In addition, employees work f our 10-hour days, working Monday-Thursday and must be willing and able to work various hours that may include early mornings, evenings, Fridays, weekends, and holidays.
