THE POSITION Fleet Management relies on Vehicle Service Attendants to keep in compliance with many regulations and requirements. DUTIES Equipment Mechanic Trainees participate in a comprehensive training program and receive intensive on-the-job instruction and training, and experience as a trainee under close supervision performing light mechanic work and preventative maintenance of various types of automotive transportation equipment, such as cars and trucks; attend approved technical classroom training during off duty hours; and receive evaluations periodically as the training progresses to ensure performance milestones are met and critical competencies are assessed. These are intended to develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to qualify for promotion to the Equipment Mechanic Assistant class. REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S) One year of full-time paid experience with the City of Los Angeles as a Garage Attendant and currently in this class with the City of Los Angeles; or Attendance at one of the following City of Los Angeles General Services Division’s Equipment Mechanic Training Program Information Sessions; and Completion of a minimum of one (1) of the following courses offered by the Los Angeles Unified School District: (a) CTE Auto Maintenance & Light Repair 1AB (b) CTE Auto Maintenance & Light Repair 2AB (c) CTE Auto Maintenance & Light Repair 3AB (d) Auto Engineering AB (e) CTE Auto Technology: Brakes AB (f) CTE Auto Technology: Electricity & Electronics/2 AB (g) CTE Advanced Auto Technologies AB or Current enrollment in the Automotive and Related Technology Certification Program offered by the Los Angeles Trade Technical College. SELECTION PROCESS Examination Weight: Interview - 100% The examination will consist entirely of a weighted interview. In the interview, candidates may be examined for basic knowledge of: electrical and electronic theory used to diagnose, test, and repair automotive electrical systems and accessories; the operation of vehicular cooling systems, heating systems, and air, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical brake systems; the mechanical principles and components of gasoline and diesel combustion engines; the functions of transmission components, including automatic and clutch; tires, wheels, and wheel alignment steering components; how gas, diesel, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), and methanol fuel systems react with combustible engines; drive line principles and components; maintenance, safe handling, and testing of vehicle batteries; the basic design, construction, and principles of operation of internal combustion engines, charging systems and related components; materials, machinery, tools and equipment used to inspect, test, diagnose, repair, maintain, tune-up and overhaul automotive equipment; safety procedures and equipment required when working with or around automotive equipment in a repair shop; basic arithmetic; and the ability to: diagnose, adjust, repair, and replace electrical system components, fuel system components, and final drive components; determine damaged, broken, or missing components of transportation equipment using sight, touch/feel, smell, and hearing; read and interpret reports, manuals, technical service bulletins, vehicle history files, technical drawings, safety procedures, and schematics used in wiring diagrams, manufacturers’ manuals, and specifications; and other necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.
