ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTThe Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax, and Novato. ABOUT THE POSITIONCurrent Vacancy: There is currently one (1) full-time, regular hire Librarian II position located in the Marin City branch.
Librarian IIs function as specialists in major program assignments such as children's or adult services. Incumbents exercise initiative and considerable independent judgment performing assigned duties including the supervision of staff.
With guidance from the Branch Manager, the Librarian II designs and implements innovative and effective public programs, provides reference and reader’s advisory, offers targeted outreach activities, and provides proactive customer service. This position will work at the Marin City Library 3 days per week & Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy School Library 2 days per week.
Duties will include:- Assisting with some program creation/execution at the branch as well as assisting colleagues on the desk: conducting reference/readers advisory services and patron account assistance as needed. Serves as supervisor on site when the branch manager is not present.
- Supervising a small group of professional Librarians and Specialists at the school and at the branch:
- At the school: provides feedback and evaluation for the on-site Community Library Specialist. Supports the creation of educational programs and literacy instruction for students and collaborates with school staff and administrators to support student research objectives.
- At the branch: supervises the Children’s and Adult Services Librarians, conducting their performance evaluations and helping them set goals for their work.
- Assists at the school site two days per week providing library services for youth (Transitional Kindergarten through 8 th grade) from a pre-set curriculum; Assists with and helps plan the after-school program; Offers information Literacy and library use instruction for teachers as needed and attends weekly faculty meetings at the school.
- In partnership with the school library staff, supervises weeding and approves school library collection development:
- Researches, evaluates, reviews and recommends the addition of books, reference materials and other library materials as needed.
- Gives final approval of the weeding and ordering of new materials.
Bilingual Skills are highly desirable for this position.Schedule and Hours: The Librarian II positions at each branch will have varying schedules. Most Librarians that enter MCFL through this recruitment will work a weekend day and may work at least one evening per week.
Bilingual Testing/Certification: To be eligible for the bilingual differential, the successful candidate must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidates possess the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.
LiveScan: Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff's Department and must pass a Department of Justice LiveScan background check prior to appointment.
ABOUT YOUThe ideal Librarian II candidate possesses strong cultural sensitivity skills and works independently and in team environments, bringing services to diverse communities and promoting educational and social equity in service delivery and programming results. We are looking for a candidate who:

- Possesses public library and/or school library experience.
- Recognizes the importance of outreach, communication, developmentally appropriate practices, and continuous learning.
- Has experience with supervising staff working in varied environments.
- Is a collaborative team member who is able to work well with both those they supervise, and with colleagues and community partners on various projects.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and techniques of library science and information services.
- Reference sources and search techniques, including the use of on-line catalogs, databases, Internet, print and other sources.
- Techniques of organizing library materials to meet patron needs.
- Principles of collection development and materials selection.
- Principles and practices of employee supervision, including work planning, review, and evaluation.
- Automated library information systems software and hardware.
- Customer relations techniques.
- Depending on assignment, techniques and practices of adult or children's services, including providing extensive readers' advisory services or juvenile literature and storytelling.
Ability to:
- Advise and instruct patrons on reference sources and the online catalog.
- Perform detailed and difficult reference searches using on-line methods.
- Plan, organize, supervise, review and evaluate the work of staff; effectively recommend selection of staff, disciplinary actions and other personnel matters; train staff in work procedures.
- Provide reader's advisory services and referrals to patrons of various age groups.
- Identify the needs of the public and assist with collection development by evaluating and recommending materials for acquisition.
- Represent the library system in the community and at professional meetings.
- Explain policies and procedures to patrons and staff.
- Use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
- Organize own work and set priorities.
- Maintain accurate records and files.
- Prepare clear and concise reports, educational materials and other written materials.
- Direct the preparation of effective displays.
- Use current automated library technology effectively.
- Manage multiple projects and adapt to changing needs.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
- If assigned as a cataloger, apply cataloging skills to enhance public access to information in a text and/or web-based catalog.
