The OpportunityWe are pursuing qualified candidates to fill Appraiser Assistant positions within Los Angeles County's Assessor's Office. The position assists professional appraisers by performing routine appraisal duties and the less complex on-site inspections of real and personal property for assessment purposes.
Essential Job FunctionsPosition Responsibilities- Conduct or assist in conducting simple on-site inspections of real or personal property by conducting market research, scheduling inspection appointments, taking pictures with a camera, visualizing spatial relationships, making accurate property measurements and diagrams, conducting interviews, and writing descriptions of the property being appraised.
- Measure and diagram new property additions or alterations by using measuring tape and building plans, and online and digital diagramming tools.
- Review new construction statements by reading and verifying statements and contacting property owners for missing or additional information.
- Confirm current land and improvement base values by reviewing department data records to obtain land values, use of permits, tax evaluation, etc.; referring to original source documents; and collecting, recording, maintaining data.
- Prepare referral records and field books for use on on-site inspections by transferring leased equipment and property value data from property statements.
- Monitor property records by performing research utilizing county records, and checking records for changes.
- Read and interpret legal descriptions of real property as contained in a variety of deeds and other documents and compares with cadastral maps to identify the location of the property and the Assessor's parcel number.
- Contact other departments, taxpayers, attorneys, and public and private agencies.
- Review documents, records, and various forms to ensure the accuracy and completeness of such information as grantor and grantee names, mailing or situs address, document numbers, recording date, and map book, page, and parcel numbers.
- Answer questions and give information to the public and refers the more difficult inquiries to the supervisor or designated employee.

RequirementsRequirements to QualifySuccessfully completed 60 semester units or 90 quarter units in an accredited college
* -AND- Successfully completed the
California Property Taxation and Appraisal (CPTA) noncredit program at Rio Hondo College.
** Desirable QualificationCompletion of 6 semester or 9 quarter units of accounting.

BEFORE FEBRUARY 7, 2026, may also apply for this exam. Applicants
must submit proof of current enrollment either at the time of application filing or by sending it to DCousin@hr.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days to be invited to take the multiple choice and/or simulation assessments (please refer to
"Examination Content" section for more details). Such candidates who achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on these assessments will be placed on "
WITHHOLD" status until the
official Letter of Participation is received and verified by our human resources unit. Candidates who fail to complete the
California Property Taxation and Appraisal program and submit their Letter of Participation
BEFORE FEBRUARY 7, 2026,will not be added to the eligible register.
Withhold applicants will be added to the hiring list (eligible register) once completion of the Selection Requirements is verified. LicenseA valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical ClassPhysical Class II - Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Transfer of Test Responses
If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

Eligibility and Vacancy InformationCandidates who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months. The list of successful candidates created from this exam will be used to fill vacancies in the Los Angeles County Assessor's Office.
