Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Division, is recruiting for
Vector Control Technician Trainees who, under the direct supervision of State certified vector control technicians, learn to perform technical duties in identifying, abating and suppressing vectors. Duties include the following: determine the extent of mosquito and other arthropod breeding and recommend appropriate physical and chemical abatement methods; inspect residences, water runoff sites, poultry ranches and other sites for vector infestation; select and monitor progress of rodent control programs.

Benefits By Occupational Unit: Technical & Inspection
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.
Physical Requirements: Duties may involve occasionally leveraging approximately one hundred (100) pounds; lifting up to fifty (50) pounds; bending, stooping, and kneeling; working with hazardous materials and poisons.
Travel/ Driver License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
Vector Control Technician Trainees are eligible to promote to Vector Control Technician I after obtaining certificates as a Vector Control Technician in pesticide safety, mosquito control, terrestrial invertebrate vector control, and vertebrate vector control from the California State Department of Health, and after receiving a satisfactory work performance evaluation.
Trainees must be promoted to Vector Control Technician I within 24 months of hire or employment will be terminated.

Minimum RequirementsApplicants
must meet
one of the following options:
Option 1: Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework from an accredited college or university in environmental health, biology, chemistry, physical sciences or other related natural sciences.
A list of completed coursework must be submitted with the application, if candidate does not possess an Associate's degree (or higher) in one (1) of the qualifying fields of study. -OR- Option 2: One (1) year full-time equivalent of direct field experience in vector, rodent, or pest control.
