    Job Summary

    Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services and/or his designee, determines the need for and conducts operations related to the application of horticultural and pest control treatments to campus grounds and landscape and oversees maintenance, modification and replacements of the university irrigation systems.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Determines the needs for and conducts operations related to the application of horticultural and pest control treatments to campus grounds and landscape.
    • Responsible for the input and tracking of labor of pest services into famis software. Responds to customer calls for work orders. Coordinates schedules of chemical treatments with various leads and campus departments.
    • Dispense herbicides and train employees on the safe and effective means for application of chemical and herbicides. Maintain chemical use records and complete monthly reports of usage and applications of chemicals to the Department of pesticide regulation (DPR).

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    The role requires thorough knowledge of plant diseases, weed conditions, and the behaviors of noxious animals and insects, along with a deep understanding of the characteristics and effects of various poisons and sprays used in their control. Proficiency in available materials and control techniques is essential, as is familiarity with county, state, and federal regulations governing chemical use. A general awareness of the environmental impact of these chemicals and the necessary safety precautions is also important, as is an understanding of how environmental factors influence pest populations and their control. The ability to accurately identify and treat horticultural and pest issues, operate and perform minor repairs on spray equipment, and maintain detailed records and reports for regulatory agencies is crucial. Strong reading and writing skills appropriate to the position, along with a solid work history, further support success in this role.

    Education and Experience

    • Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in specialized pest and/or spray control work required.

    Physical Summary
    • Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

    Licenses / Certificates

    • CA Driver's License and possession of the appropriate State of California license to perform pest control work required.

    • Qualified Applicator license of pesticides issued by The Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). Category A - Residential, Industrial, and Institutional. Category B - Landscape Maintenance. Category F - Aquatics preferred.

    • Relevant work experience in a university or large institutional setting preferred.

    Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

    Compensation

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,907 - $6,375 per month.

    Time Base

    1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

    Duration of Appointment

    This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

    Additional Information

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
