    Vacation & Sick Leave

Vacation and sick leave accruals begin on the first day of employment and may be used upon accrual. Additionally, employees receive credit towards vacation leave accruals for years of service with other public sector retirement systems nationwide (not including Federal service).

    Holidays

    The City of Buckeye observes eleven holidays per year: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

    Retirement
    This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12%, per fiscal year.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled and skilled activities in regulatory signing and pavement marking, maintenance and installation, and equipment operations. The difference between this position and the Signs and Markings III position is that this job requires additional oversight of work assignments for staff ensuring work activities are completed as directed in a safe and timely manner, assists the Foreman with the daily shop operations, assists the Foreman with inventory controls and coordinates staff training.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

    • Performs a variety of specialized maintenance work in assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Removes, installs, and maintains City signs, signposts, and other traffic control devices as needed; removes damaged or old signs and signposts; operates equipment associated with this work such as post drivers, post pullers, and various hand tools.
    • Lays out stripes; paints and maintaining lane lines, center lines, crosswalks, turn arrows, stop bars railroad crossings, parking stalls, curbs, and other pavement markings; operates equipment associated with this work such as thermoplastic or paint (e.g.,) applicators, torches, and various power tools.
    • Designs and produces standardized and specialized signs using modern sign-making equipment and digital technology.
    • Coordinate work activities for other employees within the signs and markings division.
    • Reads and interprets blueprints; installs signs and pavement markings.
    • Lead worker who creates computer aided graphics and art design work; makes decisions on letter size, spacing, length/width of sign, size of sign, and amount of sheeting to be used; when required, will follow MUTCD standards. Trains other staff on equipment operation; overseeing work activities.
    • Participates in and prioritizes work, and decides the equipment and materials needed to accomplish work assignments; serves as a both a shop and field lead to lead and direct the activities of other workers within the Signs and Markings Division. Fills in for Signs and Markings Foreman in their absence.
    • Maintains and cleans signs, marking, tools, and equipment.
    • Places and retrieves traffic cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices; Main point of contact for job site flagging to control traffic through job sites.
    • Responds to emergency call outs.
    • Operates a variety of light and/or medium construction and/or maintenance equipment.
    • Operates, maintains, and repairs a variety of hand and/or power tools, which include paint guns, rollers, saws, paint stripers, blowers, chain saws, jack hammers, and/or a variety of other equipment.
    • Completes a variety of logs, documents, and/or complex reports regarding quantity of materials handled, equipment operations, miles driven, fuel and oil used, and/or other related information.
    • Monitors inventory and supply levels; responsible for replenishment of materials.
    • Monitors and leads staff in the field at multiple job sites simultaneously. Assists Foreman with performance evaluations, cost estimates, as required.
    • Performs the essential functions as described in the physical demand and work environment sections below.
    • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.


    Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

    Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent and four (4) years’ experience with striping and sign installation; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have at the time of hire: International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I, Signs Technician Level II, and Pavement Markings Technician Level II. Within 1 year of hire obtain Pavement Markings Technician III certification.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:
    • City policies and procedures.
    • Specialized equipment maintenance and repairs.
    • Safety standards and practices.
    • Principles of record keeping and record management.
    • Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and Phoenix Barricade Manual.


    Skill in:
    • Safe and efficient operation of equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
    • Reading and interpreting maps, technical specifications and operations manuals for equipment.
    • Understanding and application of MUTCD guidelines.
    • Effective oral and written communication.
    • Ability to operate specialized equipment and software applications.
    • Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
    • Teaching and leading teams.
    • Exercising initiative and independent judgment; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    Ability to:
    • Operate Graphtec plotter with Flexi software or equivalent software.
    • Properly install and maintain regulatory signs and pavement markings.
    • Obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers License within first year of employment
    • Exercise initiative and independent judgement.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public.


    12-Month Goals:
    • Complete City-sponsored leadership training.
    • Obtain certification for Traffic Control Supervisor
    • Become proficient in the use of OpenGov software


    Additional Information

    Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Arizona Driver’s License. Ability to obtain and maintain Arizona Commercial Driver’s License class B within one (1) year of employment).
    Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed outdoors or in a shop fabrication setting.

    Supervision Exercised: Assigns and leads the work of other Signs and Markings Technicians
    FLSA Status: Non-exempt
