The PositionThe City of Riverside, General Services Department is accepting applications from current employees for the position of
BUILDING SERVICES SUPERVISOR to fill one (1) vacancy in the
Building Maintenance Division. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to twelve (12) months.
The Building Maintenance Division maintains the functionality, appearance, and security of City owned buildings. The Building Services Division, within the General Services Department, supports over 133 facilities located throughout the city by corrective and preventative maintenance programs. Building Services is responsible for the custodial, security, and maintenance functions of each facility. The ideal candidate for the Building Services Supervisor position will be experienced in managing staff and subcontractors, contract management of building systems including janitorial, security and the general oversight of in-house maintenance and repair staff who perform work on electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems. The best candidate will be customer service focused, a problem-solver, and capable of leading and motivating teams. They will also be able to efficiently perform work using the full suite of Microsoft Office packages and be able to demonstrate proficiency with Work Order Management systems.
The Building Services Supervisor, under general supervision, will plan, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of semi-skilled workers and skilled technicians in the installation, maintenance, repair, alteration and limited construction of City buildings and facilities; and do related work as required.
Work PerformedDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plan, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of semi-skilled workers and skilled technicians (maintenance workers, custodians, carpenters, painter, electricians and plumbers) in the maintenance, repair, construction, alteration and general upkeep of City building, facilities and related fixtures and equipment.
- Receive work orders; prepare estimates of time and materials needed; make sketches and diagrams for subordinates to follow; determine priorities with superior and schedule work in an orderly and timely manner.
- Inspect work in process and upon completion for quality and conformance to instructions, building codes and standards; assist subordinates with difficult work problems.
- Prepare requisitions for materials and supplies; maintain records of time and materials used; prepare and submit records and reports as required.
- Conduct periodic inspections of City buildings, facilities and related fixtures and equipment to identify maintenance needs.
- Assist in administering outside contracts for custodial, security, fire and intrusion systems and various construction projects.
- Assist in budget preparation and administration.
- Supervise, train and evaluate subordinates.
QualificationsEducation: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade
Experience : Four years' experience in skilled journey level building maintenance including upkeep, repair, alteration and limited design and construction work involving rough and finish carpentry, electrical and plumbing trades, and also including some experience and/or training in supervisory skills applicable to the building services field.
Necessary Special Requirement Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid California motor vehicle operator's license.
Highly Desirable Qualifications:- Five (5) or more years of hands-on experience in a skilled journey level building trade such as: commercial electrical, commercial plumbing, or other related commercial construction trades.
- Five (5) or more years’ experience in the management of service contracts, customer service, and work order systems
- Five (5) or more years Facilities Management experience which includes upkeep, repair, alteration, contract management, building systems maintenance, and access control systems in a supervisory capacity.
- Three (3) or more years in the administrative facilitation and procurement of various maintenance contracts that encompass more than (10) facility locations.
- Three (3) or more years of proficiency in utilizing Work Order Management systems.
- Three (3) or more years of experience with Microsoft Office Applications
- Three (3) or more years in the administrative management of maintenance budgets.

- Retirement for Classic Members - For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are CLASSIC MEMBERS of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7 % @ age 55; 3-year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 8%. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who ARE NOT a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 50% of the normal cost and is subject to change per CalPERS every fiscal year. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Health Insurance - The City offers six health insurance plans and contributes up to $1,734 per month for HMO plans(family coverage).
- Dental Insurance - The City provides three dental insurance plans and contributes up to $45 per month.
- Vision Insurance - The City provides vision coverage through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
- Life Insurance - The City provides and pays for term life insurance with accidental death and dismemberment equal to two times the annual salary rounded to the next highest $1,000 (up to $700k) plus AD&D. Additional Life Insurance is available and voluntary for employee and eligible dependents (up to $300k).
- Deferred Compensation - The City contributes $100 per month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check. Participation in the deferred compensation plan is optional.
