This classification is also used in the Airport, Public Works, and Long Beach Utilities Departments.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESUnder direct supervision, wires, installs, maintains, repairs, and tests electrical light and power apparatus and equipment and performs related work as required for wiring facilities for open and concealed power and light; installs wires and equipment for outdoor temporary and permanent decorative installations; makes electrical connections to apparatus and equipment; installs, removes or repairs electrical equipment; locates trouble and makes temporary emergency and permanent repairs to circuits and equipment; installs, repairs and maintains street lighting systems, flood lighting systems, and traffic control equipment; follows prescribed safety rules in the performance of necessarily hazardous tasks requiring good physical strength and agility, especially when making electrical installations and repair at considerable height from the ground; performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEA current State of California General Electrician Certificate

(proof required)*. *Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Ability to climb when performing overhead electrical work;
- Ability to lift heavy objects up to 75 lbs. and over 75 lbs. with assistance;
- Ability to work at heights up to 120 ft;
- Ability to work in confined spaces;
- Ability to work in boat or near water.
Willingness to work an irregular schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and shift rotations as required.
A valid motor vehicle operator's license and current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection.
Appointed candidates will be required to attend training on the proper procedures for handling lead paint and asbestos and to obtain State of California certification.
Harbor Department candidates must be able to pass a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) background prior to the completion of probation.
Long Beach Airport candidates must be able to pass Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background checks, maintain SIDA access badge, and obtain an Airfield Movement Area Driver's Permit prior to the completion of probation; and have the ability to work on complex airfield lighting systems.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a continuous non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran’s Credit will
be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period.
