The Team... The Security Division is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for port operations, visitors, and the community, as well as ensuring the efficient movement of commerce upon which the nation depends. The Security Division is a close knit-team that functions in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and routinely collaborates with every other division in the Port, and a broad range of state, local, and federal partner agencies.
This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20 hours per week, up to 29 hours a week, for a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The Role... Under the direction of the Manager of Security, the Administrative Intern will support the administration of the Port's Business Continuity (BC) Program. The Training Section is responsible for developing, updating, and implementing Security Division staff training and exercise programs.
How you get to contribute: - Assist in the development and maintenance of all hazard contingency plans and recovery plans
- Participate in business impact analyses with representatives from other Department Divisions
- Assist in the development of drills and exercises that test the Port's plans and staff
- Assist in preparing the Port's Department Operations Center (DOC) to support emergency response
- Monitor storage and ensure readiness of emergency resources and response gear
- Design training materials and participate in training Port staff
- Work in the field (partial), maintaining emergency gear and resources
- Ability to perform physical activity involving, climbing into trailers and containers, and setting up inflatable tents
- Ability to carry up to 25lbs
- Perform other duties as required
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE What we are looking for: Open to
current students enrolled in a Master of Emergency Management Program or closely related Masters Program is preferred.
A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
To REALLY catch our attention: Your profile and experience will demonstrate the following professional attributes and strengths:
- Course work focused on emergency management and/or business continuity.
- Experience in disaster and/or emergency/contingency preparedness.
- A strong working knowledge and familiarity with MS Office.
- Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
- Ability to correctly interpret industry standards including NFPA Standard 1660.
- A general understanding of maritime and security terminology is desirable.
- Detail oriented is a must.
SPECIAL NOTE This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.
The non-career Intern position typically works 20 hours per week and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
