    Job Summary

    The purpose of this position is to maintain the upkeep and cleanliness of Recreation and Parks' buildings and grounds to ensure sound operations and a safe work environment. This is accomplished by completing minor repairs using basic hand tools, changing light bulbs, moving furniture and heavy boxes, general janitorial duties, pressure washing; stripping and waxing floors; and other tasks as assigned.

    *Note: This position requires working a flexible schedule to cover meetings, special events, tournaments, inclement weather, and emergency callbacks.

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

    Examples of Duties

    • Cleans floors, walls, windows, lavatory fixtures, stairs, and doors using brooms, dust mops, heavy wet mops, brushes, and sponges;
    • Operates buffing machine to remove or renew wax finishes;
    • Empties trash containers;
    • Replaces and removes light bulbs;
    • Performs manual labor related to building operations;
    • Notifies supervisor of cleaning supplies inventory;
    • Makes minor repairs;
    • Moves office furniture and equipment;
    • Makes deliveries and runs errands;
    • Transports supplies and materials;
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:
    • Ability to read and write sufficiently to complete required tasks (High school diploma or GED preferred); and
    • One year of experience in custodial/building facility maintenance work.
    OR
    • High school diploma or GED; and
    • At least six months of experience in custodial/building facility maintenance work.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of:
    • materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning and related custodial operations.
    • hazards and safety methods related to custodial operations.

    Ability to:
    • use assigned cleaning equipment.
    • climb and work safely from ladders.
    • understand and follow oral and written directions.
    • perform a variety of manual tasks.
    • work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public.
    • work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
    • meet the mental and physical demands of the job.


    Special Requirements

    • Must possess and maintain a valid, current North Carolina driver's license that is not revoked, suspended, or subject to limited restoration or conditional operation privileges and an acceptable driving record.
    • Requires working a flexible schedule to cover meetings, special events, tournaments, inclement weather, and emergency callbacks.
    • Normal work hours for this position are 6:00 am - 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Times may alter during summer months, weekend work, and covering for events.
    • Requires the lifting and/or carrying of heavy objects; 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, along with the other duties.
