    This position is Extended Part-time with a schedule requirement of 32 hours per week.
    All applicants must be able to pass the Public Safety background check process.

    THE POSITION:

    The purpose of positions in this classification is to provide professional and technical support services for the Irvine Police Department Public Information Office using visual communication techniques, including graphic design and layout, multimedia presentations, social media, video production and technical research.

    The work is typically performed under the supervision of the Media Services Coordinator III.

    YOUR IMPACT :

    • Design, organize, and illustrate a variety of materials such as fliers, newsletters, brochures, posters, maps, graphs, reports and marketing/promotional materials for department and City initiatives and events. Administer the print process through final production.
    • Generate new design concepts and graphics solutions for varied projects; select media to be used for visual presentations, including video, photography, graphics, type style and size, ink color and paper stock.
    • Meet with department staff to determine the scope of projects and clarify the intended message and the proposed audience for the material. Develop graphics and visual images to illustrate the message.
    • Use a camera to take photographs at City events and programs; select, edit, manipulate and retouch photographs to enhance quality for electronic and print publication. Select appropriate photographs for design projects and catalogs and maintains digital photo images, design photograph and slide presentations.
    • Administer the Public Safety portion of the City website and oversee the content and formatting of all postings for both internal and external web pages for the department; advise department users on style and content and recommend changes to content submitted by others.
    • Produce and direct video productions for community and special events. May produce and broadcast live meetings, training sessions and workshops. Set up, coordinate and operate lighting, audio, voice-overs, format design, editing, and occasionally script writing.
    • Maintain state of the art knowledge and expertise in the areas of assignment, including principles, practices and techniques for website development, branding and marketing; software innovations that may improve the department's public communications; and software used in the editing and manipulation of photographs, the design and creation of electronic print specifications, and the creation of visual presentations.

    • Ability to acclimate to a flexible and adaptive work schedule to attend special events, press conferences, and other city happenings occurring outside of typical business hours.
    • Maintain a high level of creativity, resourcefulness, and a keen understanding of the policies, priorities and intended audience for the department and the City. Ability to exercise the judgment and decisiveness in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria.
    • Ability to interact effectively, orally, electronically, graphically and in writing with elected and appointed officials, City staff, law enforcement professionals, community representatives, and the general public.
    • Knowledge of the activities of a law enforcement agency and the laws and regulations governing City and law enforcement operations; and ability to quickly learn and apply City and department standards and preferences for communication with the public.
    • Knowledge of principles and applications of modern and sophisticated digital and film cameras and editing equipment; knowledge of video equipment, including projectors, controllers, switchers, mixers, computers, microphones, digital amplifiers, scale converters, and others.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work independently and maintain work effectiveness with frequent changes in workload and priority of assignments, and under pressure of deadlines.
    • Knowledge and experience in creating, programming, and publishing appropriate law enforcement social media content.
    • Ability to write newsletter content, scripts, news releases, talking points, social media captions, and department statements.


    Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

    • Equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by courses in computer design and/or some experience performing a variety of graphics and desktop publishing work; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge skills and abilities.
    • May require a valid California driver’s license.
