    What does a Stenographic Reporter do?
    The Stenographic Reported will take and transcribe verbatim shorthand or stenotype notes of victim, witness, and suspect statements during criminal and other investigations either in the field or in the office, and under difficult interrogation and stake-out conditions.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Takes verbatim shorthand or stenotype notes of statements made by victims, suspects, and witnesses and the questions asked by detectives and other officers during investigations in the office or in the field and under difficult conditions and at any hour of the day.
    • Transcribes notes exactly as taken.
    • Transcribes statements and testimony from a dictating machine, digital recorder, or other recording device.
    • Appears in court under subpoena to read shorthand, stenotype, or audio notes.
    • Performs general stenographic or clerical duties as required.


    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
    • Completion of an approved stenotype school program* and six months stenographic experience.
    • Minimum Dictation Rate: 180 words per minute.


    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
    • Additional stenographic experience beyond the Selection Requirements.
    • A current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Court Reporters Board of California.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    WITHHOLD INFORMATION:
    Individuals with stenographic experience may file for this examination if they are within three (3) months of meeting the experience requirements by the last day of filing. However, their names will be withheld from the eligible list until the required experience is fully met.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    Once we have determined that you qualify, our examination process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on your responses to the application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, which is weighted 100%.

    The passing score to be placed on the list is 70% or higher.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION :
    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the list is created.

    QUALIFYING BACKGROUND CHECK:
    Before a final appointment is made to this position, you will be required to complete and pass a thorough background investigation including a Live scan.

    Examples of disqualifying factors are:
    • Any criminal charges or convictions
    • Job related misdemeanor convictions
    • Certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations such as three (3) moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at-fault accidents; applicant placed on a three (3) year probation
    • Poor credit history
    • Poor employment history
    • Substance abuse
    • Driving under the influence

    VACANCY INFORMATION :
    The list of successful candidates created from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

    AVAILABLE SHIFT:
    Stenographic Reporters are rotated through a variety of developmental assignments, incumbents may be assigned to work in any area of Los Angeles County and on any shift (evenings, nights, and weekends).

    VETERAN'S CREDIT
    If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. Please include a legible copy of your DD214 form to review in order to receive the additional credit.
