    ABOUT THE POSITION

    The Clark County Juvenile Justice Department is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Juvenile Detention Assistant position. This position personally and electronically monitors juveniles in residential facilities; patrols buildings and grounds. Candidates will conduct and record bed checks, report unusual situations to professional staff, and ensure the safety and security of assigned juveniles. This position could also be subject to shift work that includes nights, evenings, and weekends.

    THIS RECRUITMENT MAY BE USED TO FILL SOME POSITIONS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES FROM LAS VEGAS , 2400 ANGEL PEAK PL, LAS VEGAS, NV 89124

    Please note the starting salary for this position is $20.00 per hour.

    This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

    Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified applicants to the selection process.

    Some positions may be used to fill term Limited-Permanent positions. The selected candidates will be hired for a special project or duties of a limited duration and be required to sign a term of employment letter specifying condition and exact dates of employment. The successful selected candidates will be eligible for benefits during the duration of employment.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school AND one (1) year of full-time experience working with and caring for juveniles, preferably with at risk juveniles OR college level course work in Criminal Justice, Child Development, Psychology, Social Work, Education or related behavioral science. Professional level experience and/or education that has provided the skills and knowledge necessary to perform all job functions at this level may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
    All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.     Minimum Age: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at time of appointment.

    Working Conditions: Work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts. Work in violent, traumatic or highly charged emotional environments. Specified positions may be assigned to a remote work site at high elevation. May be subject to exposure to blood and air borne diseases.

    Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver's License.

    Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted. Must not have any qualifying offense that violates the standards required by NRS 62B.223 and/or NRS 62G.223.
    Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

    Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

    Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Personally and electronically monitors juveniles in residential facilities; patrols buildings and grounds.
    • Conducts and records bed checks; reports unusual situations to professional staff.
    • As experience is gained, may perform lead Juvenile Detention Assistant responsibilities as needed.
    • Receives and gives procedural directions to incoming juveniles; prepares space and supplies for juveniles.
    • Observes and reports unusual or inappropriate behavior and emergency situations to professional staff; ensures the safety and security of assigned juveniles; provides aid and calls for medical assistance.
    • Release and prepares youth for transportation.
    • Escort youth to various locations.
    • Receives and directs persons entering property or facility for authorized purposes.
    • Restrains juveniles, as needed, using approved physical and mechanical restraint methods.
    • Completes forms, keeps records, maintains files and writes incident reports relating to the work performed.
    • Under the supervision of a Juvenile Probation Officer in a community correction setting or field office, assists with supervising youth, providing input and feedback to Juvenile Probation Officers concerning behavior and treatment of youth and families, interviewing youth and families, providing information concerning programs and community providers to youth and families.
    • Assists with telephone coverage and making contact with youth and families.
    • Assists with ensuring field office is secure.
    • Drives a motor vehicle to transport juveniles to appointments and other locations or facilities.
    • Assists Juvenile Probation Officers in maintaining the County vehicles as directed.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
    • May assist professional staff with direct supervision, intake procedures including strip searches.
    • Performs light housekeeping, laundry, and custodial duties.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Mobility to work in a typical juvenile institutional residential setting, drive a motor vehicle in order to transport juveniles to appointments and other facilities; stamina to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time, and strength to restrain and/or eject individuals; vision to use standard office equipment and read printed materials including a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
