    Job Summary

    DEFINITION:
    Makes routine inspections, cleans and services the Big Blue Bus (BBB) transit buses, service vehicles, facilities and equipment, assists mechanics in performing minor repair of vehicles and equipment, as assigned.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
    Works under general supervision of a Transit Mechanic Supervisor and/or designee performing routine assignments alone and under minimal supervision once a routine has been established.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
    None.

    NOTE: The eligible list that will be established as a result of this recruitment may be used to fill permanent and temporary (as-needed) Motor Coach Cleaner vacancies.

    Representative Duties

    Drives, services and performs routine maintenance inspections on department vehicles. Cleans, vacuums, washes and parks transit buses daily. Ensures transit buses are ready for operation.

    Cleans and services pool cars and service trucks, as assigned.

    Cleans transit bus undercarriages, engines and other parts using hot water and steam pressure washers and wash rack equipment.

    Assists mechanics by performing unskilled or semi-skilled tasks, such as steam cleaning engines, changing light bulbs, and removing and replacing minor parts and components.

    Drives department equipment, as instructed. Makes transit bus trades and cleans in-service transit buses.

    Records amounts of fuel, oil, water, and fluid added to various pool cars and service vehicles.

    Pulls fareboxes and may record fare box readings and/or mileage.

    Fuels transit buses with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), unleaded gasoline and any other alternative fuels.

    Assists mechanics with inspection and troubleshooting of minor mechanical problems.

    Assists mechanics in performing minor repairs such as replacing switches, fuses, flashers, headlights, taillights, belts, windshield wipers, tires and radiator hoses.

    Performs daily cleaning and maintenance of the equipment maintenance shop; keeps the shop in a clean condition.

    Assists Mechanics in major repairs of transit buses, pool cars and service vehicles and equipment.

    Follows appropriate safety rules and regulations.

    Performs other related duties, as assigned.

    Requirements

    Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

    Knowledge of:
    Routine maintenance procedures for vehicles and equipment
    Basic cleaning methods and practices
    Basic cleaning tools, materials, supplies and solutions
    Safe work procedures and practices
    Effective customer service techniques

    Ability to:
    Read a road map
    Follow oral and written instructions
    Perform physical labor requiring endurance and flexibility
    Dispense, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), unleaded gasoline fuels and other alternative fuel in accordance with safety guidelines and appropriate safety equipment
    Learn the proper use of cleaning chemicals, solutions and tools, including power cleaning equipment
    Maintain accurate records
    Assist mechanics with inspecting vehicles and equipment
    Assist mechanics in diagnosing vehicle and equipment problems effectively
    Assist mechanics in performing minor adjustments to vehicle and equipment
    Assist mechanics in performing adjustments and minor repairs to such components as electrical, fueling, and cooling systems
    Work independently
    Provide effective customer service
    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public

    Skill in:
    Reading, writing, and communicating at an appropriate level
    Reading and understanding labels, directions and work orders

    Education, Training and Experience:
    Graduation from high school or the equivalent.

    One year of recent, paid work experience performing vehicle or facility maintenance and cleaning activities. Recent, related paid work experience performing entry-level mechanic work which has included basic troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of vehicles and/or equipment is desirable.

    Licenses and Certificates:
    Possession of a valid Class C driver license. Must obtain a California Class B commercial driver license or permit with appropriate medical certification prior to the first day of hire. Must obtain a valid Class B driver license with passenger and airbrake endorsements within six months of hire.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Work is regularly performed outside in seasonal weather conditions. Work requires regular exposure to moving objects, dirt, fuel, chemicals, fumes from solvents and other substances. Exposure to slippery surfaces, noise, and odors is frequent. May be required to clean and disinfect biological hazards such as blood or vomit. Safety training and equipment are provided. Physical demands include continuous arm movements, walking, bending and lifting heavy weight. Assignments are on swing or graveyard shifts. Must be available to work days, weekends and holidays.
