    Community Development Director

    City of Manhattan Beach, CA

The City of Manhattan Beach is a classic, casual California beach town located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County just 19 miles from downtown Los Angeles.  Manhattan Beach has a distinct urban vibe yet maintains the warmth of a quaint, small town.  This affluent community of “Sun, Sand, and Sea” encompasses 3.89 miles and is home to 34,668 residents based on 2020 census.

The Community Development Department has a Fiscal Year 24/25 budget of $8.2 million and is supported by a full-time staff of 39 along with key part-time employees.  The Department consists of five distinct divisions: Building and Safety, Planning and Zoning, Code Enforcement, Traffic Engineering, and Environmental Sustainability Divisions, and is responsible for the development and implementation of long-term planning and policies to further the mobility and livability of the City, while providing exceptional customer services to its residents and businesses.  The City of Manhattan Beach is searching for a Community Development Director with strong communication and interpersonal skills who is a responsive, politically astute leader with experience serving highly engaged communities.

The ideal candidate will possess eight (8) years of responsible professional, administrative, and managerial experience involving planning, zoning, and community development matters within local government, including three (3) or more years of supervisory work.  A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Urban and Regional Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field is required. A Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field is desirable.

The annual salary range for the Community Development Director is $180,768 - $235,572 based on the experience and qualifications of the applicant, plus a competitive and generous benefit health and retirement package.
