    The Job

    This recruitment is only open to current San Bernardino County, Fire Department, or Special Districts employees who hold a regular, contract, extra-help, recurrent, Public Service Employee, Work Experience Program (WEX) or intern position. Former PSE, WEX, or interns are eligible to apply up to 6 months from the end of their assignment.

    The Sheriff's Department is recruiting for DNA Technical Leader to perform complex duties of DNA analysis and review of DNA casework to establish facts of criminal investigations ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and credibility of forensic results. Additionally, this position provides oversight of the Sheriff's Crime Laboratory DNA laboratory ensuring all activities, records, documents, and requirements related to the continued accreditation in handling, analysis and preservation of evidence in accordance with FBI DNA Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories, Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), and ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) requirements.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    1) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.
    2) Shift: Applicants must be available for all shifts; incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, or be on call for work, on weekends, holidays, and evenings, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination.
    3) License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at time of appointment. Employees in this class may be required to use personal vehicles and show proof of automobile liability insurance.
    3) Physical: Incumbents conducting investigations in the field must be able to climb up and down embankments and hike over rough terrain.
    5) Must successfully complete FBI DNA Quality Assurance Standards and Auditor Training within one year of appointment or be terminated.
    6) Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

    Minimum Requirements

    EDUCATION: A Master's Degree in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science-related area, with successful completion of 12 semester units of (graduate or undergraduate-level) coursework in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, and either statistics or population genetics, as required per accreditation standards for the DNA laboratory.

    EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience as a qualified analyst in forensic (human) DNA laboratory casework, as required per accreditation standards for the DNA laboratory. (At time of application, must be capable of being qualified as a technical leader per the FBI Quality Assurance Standards for DNA Testing Laboratories regarding education and experience requirements.)

    Qualifying degree and coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied by an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service indicating equivalency to degrees or coursework as above.

    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess five (5) years of experience performing casework analysis using PCR-STR techniques in an accredited forensic DNA laboratory, meeting the requirements of a DNA Technical Leader as outlined in the FBI Quality Assurance Standards for DNA Testing Laboratories.
