    Austin Transportation and Public Works Department’s Vision Zero team leads the coordination of community efforts to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities. We work with other City departments, County and State partners, nonprofits, and community advocates on a regular basis to make progress towards our goal. Our highly motivated and passionate team seeks someone who embraces this ambitious goal and is ready to make a significant contribution to saving lives in the Austin community.

    The Vision Zero team has an opening for a Program Manager II. This person will be responsible for developing and leading a broad range of programs within the Vision Zero portfolio to help move our community forward towards safer streets for all roadway users. This will include crash analytics, identification of systemic safety countermeasures, managing aspects of the program budget to deliver high quality outcomes, evaluating the impacts of investments over time. Other potential initiatives this person might work on include supporting the Vision Zero’s monthly Fatality Review Board meetings, developing proposals for traffic safety grants and implementing funded programs/projects, and leading data evaluation and research on completed projects, among many more tasks.

    The Austin Strategic Mobility Plan and Citywide Strategic Plan provide the policy guidance and define the performance measures for the City’s Vision Zero efforts. The successful applicant will continuously align priority work tasks to overarching goals and work with the Vision Zero Transportation Officer to identify and address the highest priority needs for the team.

    Pay Range
    $33.49- $42.71 per hour

    • Experience working in transportation policy or planning, particularly within a Vision Zero/Safe Systems approach.
    • Experience coordinating with people and teams outside of the individual’s own group or department/organization to deliver cross-functional solutions.
    • Experience presenting to leadership groups and/or members of the public regarding transportation safety initiatives.
    • Demonstrated history of managing program budgets, creating and adhering to project timelines, and evaluating completed projects for effectiveness.
    • Demonstrated creative problem-solving to overcome challenges where existing solutions/strategies do not exist or are not available.
    • Strong leadership skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and serve as a resource to Vision Zero team members.


    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


    Develops and implements full-scale programs that may have multiple internal and external stakeholders. Determines program goals, objectives, and resource requirements. Establishes program standards, methods, policies, and procedures. Coordinates and collaborates with multiple stakeholders involved in or affected by programs. Monitors and evaluates program effectiveness, and implements improvement strategies. Develops, manages, and monitors the program budget and associated projects and provides financial information. Assists in the development, management, and submittal of proposed budget forecast planning. Manages, coordinates, implements, and monitors projects associated with assigned programs. Interacts with internal and external customers. Investigates and responds to inquiries from the public and other departments. Attends meetings and conducts presentations Board and Commissions, City Council Committees, City Council, and other related agencies.

    • May be responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for discharge.

    City Government
