    Work Schedule & Holidays :
    • Schedule : Monday - Friday with a rotating 40 hour per week work schedule. Start times will vary between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AMdepending on the day of the week.
    • Holidays Off : Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Required to work all other holidays.


    Candidates may qualify at either level listed below:

    Solid Waste Maintenance Worker I: A minimum of one year of semi-skilled general maintenance experience is required, including performing minor, repetitive repairs. Preferred experience includes work in solid waste collection, disposal, recycling operations, general labor, maintenance or construction. Familiarity with specific tools and procedures related to these tasks is beneficial (relevant education may be substituted for experience) . A high school diploma or equivalent is required (experience may be substituted for education) . A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are required . Pay Range: $17.50 to $21.65 depending on qualifications and experience.

    Solid Waste Maintenance Worker II: A minimum of three years of semi-skilled to skilled general maintenance experience is required, including performing minor, repetitive repairs. Preferred experience includes work in solid waste collection, disposal, recycling operations, general labor, maintenance or construction. Familiarity with specific tools and procedures related to these tasks is beneficial (relevant education may be substituted for experience) . A high school diploma or equivalent is required (experience may be substituted for education) . A valid Kansas Class B commercial driver's license with air-brake endorsement is required. Pay Range: $19.75 to $26.27 depending on qualifications and experience.

    The Solid Waste Maintenance Worker I performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in the maintenance and repair of solid waste containers, equipment and facilities within the Solid Waste Division. This position performs a wide variety of support duties for the Operations and Route Supervisors and assists other city staff and the public regarding assigned programs and services.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Completes daily assignments including cleaning, repairing, delivery & pickup, and painting solid waste containers as required; collects recycled materials from City facilities; assists collection staff involved in solid waste maintenance as required; assists in the forecast of equipment needs and maintenance as necessary; m aintains and cleans the inside and outside of solid waste facilities when needed; makes minor repairs and improvements when required; coordinates with supervisor for proper maintenance to be performed; participates in the preparation and cleaning of job sites; removes refuse and debris; d elivers SmartCart trash containers for residents; picks up late waste stops that were missed by residential drivers; fills in for various routes as needed; distributes brochures and other public information/education material to proper programs and authorities; delivers curbside recycling bins when needed.
    • Completes daily reports and related documentation and correspondence for operations within the area of responsibility.
    • Takes a responsible role in implementing the safety culture of the division; ensures the adherence of safe work practices and procedures; ensures compliance of Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
    • Ensures that the equipment and vehicles associated with the division are operated in compliance with Federal, State and local codes, ordinances and regulations; operates a variety of machinery and vehicles including front, rear, & side loader trucks, container trucks, commercial compactors, mowers and other tools involved in maintenance of solid waste facilities and commercial containers.
    • Cooperates with supervisors to ensure customer service requests are resolved; responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.


    Qualifications

    Experience: One year of related experience is preferred.

    Education: Formal or informal education which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is required.

    Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license and a favorable driving record are required.
