    The San José City Council consists of ten Councilmembers elected by district and a Mayor elected at-large, each for four- year terms. The Mayor and Council are responsible for representing the residents of San José, providing accountability, reviewing public policy and programs, and adopting those policies which best meet the needs of the residents, visitors, and businesses in San José.

    Position Duties

    Council District 2 is recruiting for a dedicated part-time Student Intern with a focus on communications and public outreach. Under close supervision, this position will serve Councilmember Pamela Campos, and perform routine and/or general assistance tasks, and perform related work as required. Incumbents are expected to have no previous meaningful work experience, but must have a willingness to learn and apply their academic training to the required job assignments.

    Positions in these unclassified civil service classifications are appointed “at will” with no property right to continued employment. Each appointment is for a specified period-of-time to be determined by the appointing Councilmember and does not extend past the end of the elected official's or appointing authority's term. Assignments may be on a project basis and/or as needed basis and will not be on predetermined employment time/term limitations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:
    Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.

    Licenses and Certificates:
    Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the state of California may be required in performing job duties.

    Other Qualifications

    Desirable Qualifications:
    Digital Communications & Social Media
    •Ability to create and schedule social media content (Instagram, Facebook, Nextdoor, LinkedIn) to promote Councilmember Campos’s initiatives and community updates.
    •Ability to design graphics, flyers, and visuals for social media and outreach materials.
    •Ability to film and edit short video clips to engage constituents and highlight key community issues and events.
    •Ability to monitor social media trends and engagement, providing recommendations to enhance reach and impact.
    •Ability to assist in drafting newsletters, press releases, and other digital content.

    Event Support
    •Ability to assist in organizing logistics for public meetings, forums, and community events.
    •Ability to support event promotion, including designing invitations, social media announcements, and coordinating RSVPs.
    •Ability to provide on-site event support, including setup, check-in, and engaging with attendees.

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
