GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, provides professional security services, maintains a safe and secure environment at city facilities and parks. Provides assistance through positive demeanor, education, information or other action in matters both routine and critical as requested or needed by the staff, citizens and guests of the City of Buckeye.

- Patrols buildings, building grounds, parking lots and city parks to observe unusual behavior and to prevent vandalism or illegal use of substances.
- Enforces correction of infractions through verbal warning, expels unruly persons, and may temporarily detain more serious offenders for proper authorities.
- Observes the behavior of people, customers and monitors their actions for compliance with rules, regulations, and City ordinances related to security.
- Mediates disputes and refers matters of enforcement to appropriate law enforcement.
- Answers routine inquiries and directs visitors to appropriate areas.
- Escorts personnel from buildings and facilities after hours.
- Assist with processing patrons through security check points, which may include a stationary and handheld metal detector.
- Completes and maintains log entries and field contract reports of incidents that occur.
- Prevents unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Ensures that all visitors have vacated the building at closing and performs a security check of all doors and windows.
- Responds to security situations and alarm calls including after-hours security alarm calls.
- Answers and evaluates incoming inquires and questions from City personnel and the general public.
- Explains, interprets, and requests compliance with the City policies and procedures, workplace security, workplace violence, departmental rules, security detail procedures, and City ordinances related to security.
Minimum Qualifications & Position RequirementsEducation and Experience:- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of one year of experience as an: armed security guard, police officer, or military police officer.
- A minimum of one year of experience in a position involving significant interaction with the public.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of:- Principles, practices, and methods of providing general security to people and property, and their application to City municipal security policies and procedures.
- Security observation.
- Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, policies, and procedures relevant to assigned areas of responsibility.
- Principles and practices of workplace security and violence prevention.
- Principles and practices of dispute resolution and deescalating potentially hostile circumstances.
- Principles and practices of exercising situational awareness and safety protocols.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination.
- Computers and software programs (e.g., Microsoft software packages) to conduct, compile, and/or generate documentation.
Skill in:- Computer software programs including MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Developing and maintaining professional and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work including a diverse population.
- Maintaining basic and accurate records.
Skill & Ability to:- Understand and apply routine security surveillance techniques and principles.
- Analyze situations quickly and objectively; react effectively and efficiently in urgent or emergency situations.
- Deal effectively with all segments of the public in stressful situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and sometimes firmness.
- Anticipate problems related to establishing and maintaining safety and security in City facilities and develop effective solutions to address and mitigate problems.
- Prioritize work assignments and tasks.
- Prepare written documents with clearly organized thoughts with proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work cooperatively, courteously, yet firmly with all segments of the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
- Effectively represent the department and the City in meetings with the public, individuals, governmental agencies, and community groups.
- Understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
- Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
- Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
- Operate security systems and emergency equipment.
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate grammar and syntax.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
12-Month Goals:- Successfully complete the Municipal Security Field Training program.
- Successfully complete the Court Security Guard Academy 3-day in-person Academy within 3 months of completing the Municipal Security Field Training program.
- Demonstrate the ability to complete all required documentation with the required details and write clear, concise, and accurate reports as evidenced by supervisory review and approval.
- Exhibit professionalism and effective communication skills through all forms of communication through interactions with members of the public as well as other members of the City of Buckeye Team.
- Exhibit a professional appearance through maintaining a clean and presentable assigned patrol vehicle, a clean and pressed uniform appearance, and high standard of personal hygiene, as directed by department policy.
Additional InformationMust possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Arizona Driver's License with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required. Must be able to work a rotating on-call schedule after hours, weekends, and holidays to provide 24-hour response.
Elements of the Selection Process:
- Oral board interview
- Background investigation consisting of interview, polygraph, psychological and medical exam.
