The Position
Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify fleet equipment comprised of a variety of light, medium, and heavy automotive and maintenance equipment, landscape equipment, computerized testing equipment, and diesel-fueled electric power generators.
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept at the advanced journey level, and in addition, either: 1) Function as a lead worker for lower-level skilled Equipment Mechanics on a regular basis by providing training and technical assistance, work assignment and review, and providing input to performance evaluations. Positions at this level are distinguished from the lower level of the series by the lead worker responsibilities for skilled Equipment Mechanic II's and journey level skilled trades workers; or 2) In a correctional environment, function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports. Incumbents are also responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, and equipment. Supervision of a crew of inmates must be within the institution and must be a regular and recurring duty of a position to warrant allocation to this class.
This position is located at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs. Incumbents repair or rebuild complete brake systems; repair or replace steering or suspension system components; repair and service automatic and manual transmissions. Fabricate and install parts, components and special use items. The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of non-automotive mechanical equipment, inspect components for proper operation; schedule and perform preventive maintenance; troubleshooting; and repairing and overhauling components. The Mechanic will operate heavy equipment to provide assistance in carrying out agency operations; and make emergency repairs, as necessary. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level experience equivalent to the Equipment Mechanic II; OR one year of experience as an Equipment Mechanic II in Nevada State Service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law required random testing for controlled substances during employment. Some positions require incumbents to furnish their own mechanic's tools. In order to meet the needs of each agency, some positions may require specialized background, consistent with the parameters of the class specification. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
