    Position Duties

    The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies for the Construction Inspector I/II/Associate position.     The total salary range for the Construction Inspector I/II/Associate classification is $36.47 to $53.94 hourly or $75,850.32 to $117,826.80 annually. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    Landscape Inspection and Contract Management Construction Inspector’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Contract management, spending/tracking budget appropriations, and contractor coordination efforts
    • Reviewing and verifying accuracy of invoices
    • Preparing documents to pay contractor invoices
    • Visually inspecting projects
    • Validating work of contractors in the field
    • Maintaining daily inspection logs and photos
    • Ensuring all work is completed according to City of Sane standards and specifications
    • Coordinating new projects with Public Works inspectors and DOT’s structure & Landscape Designer
    • Mitigating conflicts with residents, businesses and contractors

    Sidewalk Inspection and Contract Management Construction Inspector’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Assessing sidewalk, park-strip, driveway, and curb/gutter conditions
    • Ensuring that any required repair work is performed and completed per industry and City specifications

    Street Sweeping Services Construction Inspector’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Field inspection of assigned sweeping routes
    • Maintaining daily inspection logs and photos
    • Performing data entry and field inspection reports
    • Verifying work of contractors in the field
    • Providing customer service
    • Mitigating conflicts with residents, businesses and contractors

    Pavement and Concrete Inspection Construction Inspector’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Ensuring quality product and workmanship for paving and ADA ramp projects
    • Inspecting pavement resurfacing and sealing projects
    • Validating work of contractors in the field
    • Maintaining digital daily inspection logs and photos using iPads
    • Reviewing and verifying accuracy of invoices
    • Cataloging right-of-way infrastructure
    • Measuring and recording areas of failed pavement
    • Enforcing roadway construction traffic safety standards
    • Mitigating conflicts with residents, businesses, and contractors


    Corporate Yard Compliance: The Associate Construction Inspector serves as the DOT’s Corporation Yard Compliance Officer, reporting directly to the Sewers Division Manager. This position is responsible for overseeing the safety and regulatory compliance of the DOT’s corporation yards and pump stations, ensuring adherence to all operational and environmental standards. The Associate Construction Inspector’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure DOT’s corporation yards and pump stations comply with all relevant regulatory permits and requirements.


    • Inspection Coordination: Coordinate and schedule inspections with various regulatory agencies, including the fire department, County Hazmat, Public Health Department, stormwater, and air permit agencies. Ensure that all necessary permits are current for all corporation yards and pump stations.


    • Waste Management: Oversee and coordinate waste disposal and recycling processes for the corporation yards, including scheduling waste pickups and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.


    • Forklift Training: Manage the forklift training program, including providing training and maintaining valid certification records.


    • Facility Maintenance: Perform minor repairs and coordinate with DPW Facilities to organize major upgrades and maintenance for the corporation yards.


    • Storm Season Readiness: Collaborate with the Water District to manage and maintain sandbag distribution sites during the storm season to ensure preparedness.


    • Safety Protocols: Oversee and enforce safety protocols at the corporation yards, including managing badge activation access for facility security and personnel access control.


    Urban Forestry - The Urban Forestry team is housed in the Department of Transportation but works across all of San Jose’s Landscapes. There are two core areas that this position will support. The first is the public trees. The forestry group is responsible for the care and maintenance of the trees in medians and the spaces on the streetside of soundwalls. The second, is focused on ensuring public safety by enforcing the Municipal Code. This is a flexible position with opportunities to work on various projects. The position can work on any of the following:
    • Assigning tree care tasks to contractors
    • Logistics of public tree planting
    • Issuing notices and citations for hazardous street trees
    • Basic cost tracking
    • Quality control on work completed by contractors
    • Processing requests for street trees to be planted
    • Site inspections for tree issues, tree planting and sidewalk damage
    • Construction site inspections
    • Organizing volunteer tree planting events
    • Light, on the ground, pruning
    • Responding to tree related emergencies
    • Corresponding with the public, property owners, and other City agencies
    • Nursery stock inspections
    • Gathering and manipulating tree inventory data


    Minimum Qualifications

    Construction Inspector I: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).

    Construction Inspector II:
    • Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) AND
    • Experience: Two (2) years of construction trades or construction inspection experience.

    Associate Construction Inspector:
    • Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) AND
    • Experience: F our (4) years of construction trades or construction inspection experience, including two (2) years in any combination of the following: construction or infrastructure inspection, drafting or reviewing plans and specifications, materials sampling and testing, traffic engineering, or surveying.
    • Acceptable Substitution: Completion of an Associate Degree in engineering technology, construction management or closely related field from an accredited junior college or two (2) years of college coursework in engineering technology or related subjects courses may be substituted for two (2) years of the construction trades or construction inspection experience.
    Certification/Licenses
    Possession of a valid State of California driver's license.

    Selection Process:
