    Requirements

    Education and Experience : High School Diploma, GED or higher and three (3) years of building trades experience and two (2) years of journey-level welding experience.

    Licenses and Certificates : Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by the time of appointment. American Welding Society (AWS) Certification D.1.1. by the time of appointment.

    General Purpose

    Under general supervision, performs metal repairs and maintenance on emergency vehicle fixtures, public safety equipment, and public safety facilities.

    Typical Duties

    Repair and maintain emergency vehicles, equipment, machinery, tools, and facilities. Involves: Assess, repair, maintain, or fabricate steel and stainless-steel fixtures including vehicle main body structure, compartment doors, sub-frames, water tank frames, battery boxes, front bumpers, underbody supports, pump manifolds, piping, ladder rungs, treadplates, fire hose fittings, adaptors, pumps, firefighting manifolds, dump valves, firefighting valves, and gated wyes. Repair aluminum fixtures including compartment framework, hose bed, wheel wells, beavertails, pump compartment, and running board/tailboard assemblies. Respond to field emergencies and perform on-site repairs of equipment. Install repair/replace repaired/fabricated items. Identify, undertake, recommend, and/or oversee materials, supplies, equipment, and/or parts purchase and inventory. Test and validate results. Repair and maintain fire station equipment including personal protective equipment dryers, SCBA storage cabinets, and steel/aluminum operational items. Perform fire station facility maintenance duties as assigned.

    Install new and/or enhanced equipment and/or systems. Involves: Identifying, recommending, and researching costs, parts, supplies, equipment, and material needs. Gather materials and supplies. Read, understand, interpret, and apply blueprints, schematics, and similar documents. Maintain/update files, records, reports, and logs. Oversee the welding shop budget. Coordinate service needs and schedules with other trades, vendors, contractors, departments, and others.

    Supervise assigned personnel. Involves: Meet with staff on a regularly scheduled basis. Prioritize and coordinate unit activities. Instruct, review, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance. Provide training and development. Enforce personnel rules, regulations, and work and safety standards. Counsel, motivate, and maintain harmony. Interview applicants and recommend hiring, terminations, transfers, disciplinary actions or other employee status changes.
