Wastewater Utility Worker I!
What you’ll do: This position will learn to perform routine construction, maintenance, operation, and repair tasks related to the City’s wastewater collections systems and related equipment and facilities. As experience is gained, assignments will become more varied, complex, and difficult. Responsibilities include cleaning sewer lines and lift stations, installing, modifying, maintaining, and repairing sewer facilities and equipment, and implementing knowledge of safe work practices.

QualificationsAny combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Experience: General maintenance or repair work. Experience in the repair of municipal sewer system experience is highly desirable.
License/Certificate Requirements:
Due to the performance of field duties that may include the operation of non-commercial vehicles, an applicant must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and an acceptable driving record at the time of hire.

Positions in this series may receive calls for emergency service and may be required to respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Pre-employment Process: Selected candidates must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, and a pre-placement physical including a drug test.
Physical, Mental & Environmental Working Conditions: Work is performed in various environmental conditions, with exposure to outdoor temperature and weather variations, traffic and equipment noise, vibrations, fumes, grease, machinery and moving parts, odors, dust, chemicals such as cleaning solvents, and raw sewage. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, or more than 50 pounds, with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods; and get from one location to another while doing business. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work-related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. An employee generally works outdoors. The employee will travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high, and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.
Benefits for Laguna Beach Hourly/Part-Time Employees The basic pay ranges are composed of either five (5), seven (7) or eight (8) steps.
Overtime Pay: All employees shall be compensated at a rate of time and a half for all hours worked in excess of forty hours per work week.
Retirement: Eligible employees are enrolled into the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). This program requires an employee contribution of 3.75% of base pay. The City matches your contribution for total of 7.5%.
Sick Leave: Employees receive 40 hours of sick leave annually, provided each July.
