    General

    IN ACCORDANCE WITH CBA - OPEN ONLY TO CURRENT IBT 856 MEMBERS

    The Radio Controller will report to the Manager, Bus Transportation, and is responsible for providing transit-related information in support of the fixed-route public transportation service on behalf of the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans).
    WORK SCHEDULE: 2 PM - 11 PM

    Essential Functions & Duties

    • Broadcast emergency and non-emergency transit-related information via the Advanced Communications System (ACS).
    • Monitor on-time and on-route adherence of scheduled services.
    • Provide radio support for bus operators in the field.
    • Develop alternative routes and/or detours in response to planned and unplanned conditions.
    • Liaise with County Communications, Transit Police, and first responders in resolution of emergency events.
    • Dispatch field supervision to accident scenes, road blockages, crime scenes, customer conflicts, or other situations requiring direct intervention or investigation.

    Examples of Essential Duties:
    • Operate two-way radio, using voice communications and text messaging.
    • Act as a Relief Bus Transportation Supervisor in the field or as a Relief Dispatcher when needed to fulfill service obligations. Utilize knowledgeable of the applicable DMV codes and other requirements for safe and legal operation of buses.
    • Contact Bus Transportation Managers and other internal stakeholders to report emergencies or unusual conditions via electronics scripts.
    • Maintain recordkeeping of all service events.
    • Liaison with Customer Service Department to provide assistance to SamTrans customers.
    • Coordinate standby buses or other service and restoration strategies during service interruptions.
    • Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect oneself, fellow employees and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
    • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
    • Three (3) years full-time experience in transit bus operations, or as a Radio Controller, Dispatcher, or Bus Transportation Supervisor.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Ability to speak in a clear, concise manner while operating dispatching equipment.
    • Ability to decipher radio calls to carry out emergency and non-emergency communications.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Working knowledge of an enterprise resource program (e.g., PeopleSoft, Oracle, SAP)
    • Experience using scheduling software (such as HASTUS) is desired.
    • Supervisory experience or successful completion of a Supervisory course.
    • Completion of TSI courses or certifications

    Holidays and Paid Time Off:
    • Paid Time Off - Newly hired employees accrue 6.5 hours bi-weekly when hired (if Exempt 8.25 hours).As you move up in years of service credit, the rate of the amount of PTO accrued will also increase.
    • Paid Holidays - The District provides seven paid holidays throughout the year - New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
    • Floating Holidays - District employees can earn up to five (5) floating holidays.

    Financial Planning Benefits:
    • Pension Benefits through CalPERS -You must have a minimum of 5 years of service to be eligible for this pension.
    • CalPERS PEPRA vs. Classic - All employees hired on, or after January 1, 2013, are considered PEPRA members and will contribute 8% of their salary up to the maximum IRS cut-off. All Classic members will contribute 6%
    • Deferred Compensation Options - Select to contribute to one or both of our Tax Deferred Compensation Options
    • Reliance Standard Life Insurance with 100% premium paid by the District - 1 times annual salary of employee - max $200,000
