  • Job Description

    Description

    Supervises and provides training in the maintenance and repair of rail communications and other related equipment.

    Examples of Duties

    • Conducts classroom and individualized training on all aspects of equipment repair, testing and maintenance in the area of Rail Communications
    • Prepares lesson plans, schedules, and testing performance exams
    • Provides hands-on demonstration in the repair and maintenance of various components of the rail systems
    • Develops detailed technical training and testing materials
    • Coordinates specialized training needs with division heads
    • Reports to various work locations to provide training and/or technical support to rail maintenance personnel
    • Keeps abreast with current technology by attending vendor training sessions
    • Establishes safety guidelines on maintenance procedures
    • Interviews and tests applicants
    • Operates shop and field tools and equipment for demonstration purposes related to rail systems
    • Reviews, updates, and distributes new manuals and training materials
    • Provides orientation to personnel on new equipment and systems
    • Analyzes vendor training materials for accuracy and system compatibility
    • Prepares reports and correspondence
    • Investigates equipment-related accidents
    • Serves as technical expert for troubleshooting maintenance problems
    • Develops and assesses safety programs
    • Provides technical expertise to other department personnel
    • Supervises subordinate staff
    • Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro’s safety rules, polices, and procedures
    • Maintains, supports, and promotes a safe work environment while complying with all of Metro’s safety rules, policies, and procedures
    • Conducts field Quality Assurance and Quality Control MOW fixed assets and reviews inspection documents
    • Monitors and inspects quality of workmanship and accuracy of records in accordance with equipment specifications, test procedures, codes and standards, and safety
    • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

    Minimum Qualifications

    A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

    Education
    • Associate's Degree in a related field or equivalent training from a recognized college or trade school

    Experience
    • Three years of relevant experience performing technical troubleshooting, installation, repair, maintenance, and acceptance testing of rail electronic/electrical systems and components OR Three years of relevant full-time experience providing engineering support in rail engineering maintenance OR Two years of relevant full-time experience conducting training in the repair and maintenance of rail electronic/electrical communication systems and equipment

    Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
    • Valid California Class C Driver License
    • Must be able to obtain a California Class A Commercial Driver License
    • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety & Health Act (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and protective gear "including but not limited" to respirators and/or hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
    • Positions in this job classification are considered safety sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations

    • Investigating accidents
    • Developing curricula, learning objectives, and lesson plans utilizing available hardware and software tools
    • Communicating effectively orally and in writing

    Ability to (defined as a present competence to perform an observable behavior or produce an observable result)
    • Plan, organize, and monitor training of skilled personnel in maintenance and repair of equipment and related systems
    • Operate computers and computer software
    • Assess training needs
    • Develop lesson plans
    • Prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence
    • Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
    • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
    • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
    • Travel to offsite locations
    • Read, write, speak, and understand English
