    POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

    The Seasonal Specialist positions are responsible for a variety of maintenance work including mowing, edging, weed whacking, and light construction. These positions work throughout the city in Open Space. These positions are physically demanding in nature with exposure to extreme weather conditions. These positions work four (4) ten (10)-hour days during the week (Tuesday-Friday) however hours may vary with possible weekend, holiday, and special events.

    Benefits as a result of working in this position, you will:
    • Gain knowledge, skills and experience in heavy equipment and hand tool operation including skid steers, tractors, rollers, trucks, trailers, weed whackers, mowers, blowers and hedge trimmers

    This seasonal position begins April 14 th and ends October 10 th . The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

    GENERAL COMPETENCIES
    Job Specific - Every employee in this position must be able to:
    • Demonstrate knowledge of practices used in park maintenance, lake maintenance, construction and repair
    • Operate equipment such as mowers, weeders, backpack blowers, hand tools and pick-up trucks and trailers
    • Demonstrate understanding and importance of safety rules and procedures
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
    • Demonstrate the ability to take care of equipment
    • Work independently and in a team environment and show initiative to complete tasks
    • Assist the public and City staff in a friendly and helpful manner establishing effective working relationships
    • Work in a high-use public facility environment

    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
    1. Assists with grounds maintenance which may include the following:
    • Mowing, edging, and weeding of parks, trails, lake, and right-of-ways
    • Planting and maintaining of trees, flowers and shrubs at parks
    • Removal of trash, cleaning of shelters, restrooms, and picnic shelters
    2. Assists in applying granular and liquid fertilization applications
    3. Operates light and heavy equipment including chippers, chainsaws, landscape construction equipment, skid-steers, industrial mowers, pick-up trucks, mowers, backpack blowers, small dump trucks, or similar equipment
    4. Performs general custodial work at public facilities and open space areas including removing trash and cleaning of shelters and restrooms
    5. Paints designated facilities and structures
    6. Assists with a variety of construction-related projects and playground maintenance
    7. Possesses a valid driver’s license and maintains a safe driving record
    8. Maintains regular and punctual attendance

    Open Space Job Specific Functions:
    1. Assists in the maintenance of the Open Space, including repairing and maintaining permanent structures in the Open Space
    2. Performs general custodial work including removing trash
    3. Performs trails maintenance duties
    4. Performs landscape maintenance duties
    5. Assists with volunteer projects in the open space (sometimes on weekends on a voluntary basis)

    Other Duties and Responsibilities
    1. Performs general routine maintenance as needed
    2. Follows safety procedures and uses personal protection equipment such as goggles and ear protection
    Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
    Required :
    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Valid driver’s license and maintenance of a safe driving record
    Preferred :
    • Previous experience in one or more of the following areas:
      • Daily maintenance of parks, open space and/or athletic fields
      • Operating light equipment and tools such as pick-up trucks, mowers, chippers, skid-steers
      • Light maintenance and repair of fences or structures, custodial work
    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

    Physical Requirements
    This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to:
    • Frequently sit, stand and walk on uneven terrain
    • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
    • Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
    • Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
    • Occasionally step up and down to enter and exit vehicles and climb ladders; constant actuate mechanism to safely operate heavy equipment and vehicles
    • Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
    • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
    • Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Work is constantly performed indoors and outdoors with constant exposure to extreme temperatures year-round. Position is responsible for the maintenance of all City parks, forestry, open space, and athletic fields throughout the year. Snow removal at City facilities, parks, and trails is done when needed.

    Required Materials and Equipment
    Operates light equipment such as pick-up trucks, small dump trucks, tractors, horticultural hand tools, rototillers, water equipment, trenchers, sod-cutters, pruners, and other equipment as necessary. Depending on the project, may also utilize small tools such as hammers, shovels, saws, measuring tape, levels, drills, and power tools to complete assigned responsibilities
