    The Job

    The Coroner Division of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's-Coroner Department is recruiting for Autopsy Assistant Trainees who learn to assist pathologists in conducting autopsies; maintain the forensic facility, including tools, instruments and equipment; and transport human remains.

    Autopsy Assistant Trainees are eligible for automatic promotion to Autopsy Assistant ( $49,254 - $67,641 annually ) upon meeting the minimum qualifications and receipt of satisfactory work progress report. Employees must qualify for promotion to Autopsy Assistant within twelve (12) months of hire or be terminated.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    1) Physical: Candidates must possess physical strength to move bodies from gurney to x-ray or autopsy table, and into/from a transport vehicle; may require hiking and climbing, as well as ability to lift, drag, and haul dead bodies weighing up to 300 pounds or more to remove them from the scene of death using acceptable removal techniques. Requires full range of motion and finger dexterity for grasping, holding and pushing to handle a variety of tools for cutting and suturing of bodies. Must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors from decomposed bodies and stand for long periods of time. Requires working with/near/around a variety of chemicals used in cleaning, preserving specimens, and associated with causes/results of death.

    2) Background: Candidates will be fingerprinted and must pass a background investigation, which may include a drug test, polygraph, and/or psychological evaluation.

    3) License: Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver license.

    4) Availability: Incumbents must be available for all shifts and may be required to work, or be on call for work, on weekends or holidays. Incumbents are required to be "on call" for a one-week period on a rotating basis with other autopsy assistants. NOTE: Refusal of a job offer or interview due to shift may result in removal from the eligibility list.

    5) Promotion: Autopsy Assistant Trainees must complete training within twelve (12) months or be terminated. Upon meeting the training requirements and receiving satisfactory work progress reports, Autopsy Assistant Trainees are eligible to promote to Autopsy Assistant ( $49,254 - $67,641 a nnually).
    6) Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must meet one of the following options:

    Option A: Six (6) months of full-time equivalent work experience assisting with autopsies in a forensic pathology/morgue setting. Experience must have been obtained within the last three (3) years, at a minimum of 20 hours/week.

    Option B: Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in forensic , medical , or mortuary science ; natural , life , or health science . A list of coursework must be submitted with the application if an associate's degree or higher has not been conferred.
    Note: Criminal Justice courses are not considered qualifying.

    Option C: One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience working in any of the following fields: funeral home, mortuary, Sheriff Coroner, Hospital Morgue, or Medical Examiner.

    Option D: Completion of morgue training in a volunteer/autopsy assistant internship program in a coroner or medical examiner's office with a minimum of 120 morgue hours. Training/Program must have been completed within the last three (3) years. Letter indicating completion must be submitted with the application.
