    Job Summary

    Cleans and maintains city owned parks, parking structures, Third Street Promenade pedestrian walkways, streets, alleys, sidewalks and other related areas including the cemetery and beachfront areas using light equipment.

    *The current vacancies are in the Resource, Recovery, and Recycling Division of the Public Works Department. The eligible list that will be established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill all Equipment Operator I vacancies that occur in the City during the life of the list.

    Representative Duties

    Note: Duties may vary dependent upon assignment,

    Clean and maintains parks, the Third Street Promenade and downtown district, the Santa Monica beachfront, city streets, alleys, parking structures, the cemetery and related areas by operating a variety of equipment such as sweepers, scrubbers, water tankers, skip loaders, riding mowers, power/pressure washers, edgers, weed-eaters, small rear loaders, litter trucks, forklifts, dump trucks and 2-axle trucks. Operates tractor with outboard equipment for aerating, renovating, fertilizing and leveling lawns, as assigned.

    Mows, sweeps, vacuums and removes grass cuttings, leaves and debris in City parks, streets, alleys, playgrounds, cemetery, and other turf areas. Loads and unloads sand, gravel, refuse and recyclable solid waste, soil amendments and decomposed granite. Grades ball fields and verifies measurements of markings and dimensions. Re-seeds, re-sods and fertilizes lawn areas.

    Performs routine maintenance and some minor repairs to trash receptacles, tools and equipment. Prepares areas for sprinkler installation. Assists in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.

    Hauls and stores groundskeeping supplies. Sets-up and installs a variety of equipment. Removes and installs playground equipment. Hauls and sets-up bleachers, lowering devices, risers, portable stages and furniture, as assigned.

    Coordinates day-to-day activities and special events of the Third Street Promenade and beachfront with the Downtown Santa Monica, Inc, and the Community Recreation Events Committee. Ensures that vehicles are checked for proper permits when entering the Promenade and beachfront areas.

    Paints park benches, boards and trash cans. Breaks concrete or soil for plantings. Picks-up and delivers equipment, tools and plants to work sites.

    Cemetery assignments require operating a variety of equipment used to dig and prepare grave sites. Takes appropriate measurements to set markers at grave sites and mixes and pours concrete into forms to make borders for grave markers. Fabricates concrete benches for placement at the cemetery.

    Beachfront assignments require operating a variety of equipment used to clean and remove debris from the sand and water's edge. Repairs restroom doors, exercises and recreational equipment and removes graffiti from various surfaces.

    Promenade assignments require operating a variety of equipment used to clean and remove debris from streets, sidewalks, alleys and parking structures. Performs facility related repairs in the downtown district.

    Resource Recovery and Recycling assignments require operating a variety of equipment used to collect and dispose of refuse and recycling materials.

    Coordinates a crew, when assigned.

    Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

    Performs groundskeeping duties, as assigned.

    Performs other related duties, as assigned.

    Requirements

    Note: The specific knowledge, abilities, skills and equipment may vary dependent upon assignment.

    Knowledge of:

    Landscaping and grounds keeping principles and practices.
    Mechanical maintenance procedures.
    Use and application of fertilizers and pesticides.
    Safe and efficient operation of equipment.
    Safe work practices.
    Effective customer service techniques.

    Ability to:

    Operate landscaping and heavy equipment with or including outboard attachments.
    Work safely in traffic.
    Perform physical labor.
    Lift, carry and move heavy objects.
    Take accurate measurements and maintain logs and records.
    Read maps and diagrams.
    Work in deep trenches.
    Identify mechanical problems and perform basic mechanical adjustments.
    Sit in one position for extended periods of time.
    Interpret, follow, and issue oral and written instructions as well as codes and regulations.
    Use light equipment such as skip loaders, riding mowers and backhoes.
    Perform simple repairs of irrigation systems and assist in the installation of irrigation systems.
    Clean the visible surface of drainage areas of trash debris near the beachfront.
    Coordinate the work of staff.
    Provide effective customer service.
    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.

    Skill in:

    Reading, writing, and communicating at an appropriate level.
    Basic mathematics.
    Dealing effectively with individuals of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds, using tact and discretion.

    Education, Training and Experience:

    Graduation from high school or the equivalent.

    One year of recent, paid experience performing construction, maintenance, refuse and recycling collection, landscaping or repair work that has included the operation of a vehicle.

    Licenses and Certificates :

    Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

    Seniority - 10%
