  • Job Description

    Job Summary

    Performs a variety of rough and finish carpentry in the construction, remodeling, repair and maintenance of city buildings and facilities.

    Works under the general supervision of the Carpenter Crew Leader, arranging and performing routine assignments alone. Detailed instructions are received and work in progress is reviewed occasionally to frequently. May train and provide technical advice to Trades Interns, as assigned.

    Representative Duties

    Performs a variety of interior and exterior rough and finish carpentry to demolish, remodel, construct, repair and maintain buildings and structures.

    Frames walls and door openings.

    Installs drywall, tapes and mud walls. Patches stucco.

    Installs wall and ceiling insulation materials. Installs drop ceilings. May assist with the installation of air conditioners and air duct systems.

    Removes existing and installs various roofing materials. Repairs leaks and other damage.

    Builds and installs wall and floor cabinets and counters. Installs and repairs plastic laminated tops.

    Installs, replaces and repairs floor tiles. May install ceramic tile and carpet.

    Installs windows. Hangs doors. Installs baseboards. Applies other finish carpentry techniques.

    Installs, repairs and lubricates locks.

    Secures condemned buildings by fencing and boarding up windows and doors.

    Performs other building maintenance and preventative duties, as assigned.

    Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

    Prepares materials lists.

    Completes work orders and daily time logs.

    Requests additional materials, as assigned.

    Performs other related duties, as assigned.

    Requirements

    Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

    Knowledge of:
    Various skilled rough and finish carpentry techniques.
    Uniform Building Code.
    Basic electrical and plumbing procedures.
    Basic mathematics.
    Safe work practices and procedures.
    Principles of customer service.
    Effective customer service techniques.

    Ability to:
    Train employees.
    Perform journey-level rough and finish carpentry work.
    Read and interpret blueprints, plans and drawings.
    Operate power and hand carpentry tools and equipment.
    Estimate needed materials, supplies, tools and equipment, as required.
    Lift, carry and move large and heavy building materials.
    Construct cabinets, hang doors and install drywall.
    Take accurate measurements.
    Lay out plans for framing, cabinet making, and other projects.
    Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
    Provide effective customer service.
    Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.

    Skill in:
    Reading, writing and communicating in English at an appropriate level.
    Dealing effectively with a variety of individuals.
    Performing mathematical calculations at an appropriate level.

    Education, Training and Experience:

    Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Completion of an apprenticeship training program to obtain journey-level carpenter status is desirable. Two years of recent, paid, work experience performing journey-level rough and finish carpentry work.

    Licenses and Certificates:

    Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Work is regularly performed indoors and outside in climatic weather conditions. Moving objects, noise, dust, dirt, odors, and soil are constantly encountered. Slippery
    surfaces, high elevation, cramped positions and vibrations are occasionally factors. Chemicals, odors, oily conditions are frequently encountered. Work interruptions, dead- lines and emergency calls are also encountered. Physical demands include heavy lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds, bending, reaching, and standing for long periods. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

    Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.
