    POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

    The Seasonal Specialist position is responsible for assisting with the construction, repair and maintenance of water and wastewater systems. Duties may include repairing water breaks, responding to sanitary sewer calls, and assisting with the valve and fire hydrant exercise programs, including meter reading, testing, repairing, meter pit maintenance and water disconnects for non-payment. This position involves work of a physically demanding nature.

    This seasonal position begins April 14 th and ends October 10 th .

    The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

    GENERAL COMPETENCIES

    Job Specific - Every employee in this position must be able to:
    • Utilize knowledge of equipment, materials, and practices used in general Public Works maintenance, construction, and repair
    • Utilize knowledge of applicable safety rules and procedures
    • Understand and follow spoken instructions
    • Operate light equipment including hand tools, power tools, air compressors, and pick-up trucks
    • Work effectively with minimal supervision
    • Detect safety concerns during the daily operations of the water and wastewater system
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, citizens, and contractors

    All employees are expected to provide excellent customer service, communicate in an effective manner both verbally and in writing, display professionalism and integrity, work efficiently, effectively and accurately, work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, solve problems, display good judgment, take ownership for delivering a high quality product or service, have regular and punctual attendance, and effectively handle emergency situations.

    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
    1. Assists with the construction, repair and maintenance of water and wastewater systems, including:
    • Repairing water breaks
    • Responding to sanitary sewer calls
    2. Assists with the valve and fire hydrant exercise programs, including:
    • Meter reading, testing, and repairing
    • Meter pit maintenance
    • Water disconnects for non-payment
    3. Assists in a variety of construction-related projects
    4. Assists in a variety of wastewater related projects
    5. Possesses a valid driver’s license and maintains a safe driving record (for those approved to drive)
    6. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
    Other Duties and Responsibilities
    1. May assist with weekend emergency repairs when needed
    Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
    Required :
    • Must be at least 16 years of age to apply, must be 18 for most positions; limited positions are available for applicants ages 16 and 17
    • Must be at least 16 years of age
    • Knowledge of the safe use and operation of hand and power tools
    Preferred:
    • Valid driver’s license and maintenance of a safe driving record
    • Previous experience in one or more of the following areas:
      • Manual labor
      • Construction
    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

    Physical Requirements
    Work is physical in nature and requires sufficient physical strength and stamina to:
    • Occasionally sit while driving to work assignments and performing office tasks; frequently stand and constantly walk on uneven terrain in all weather conditions to safely complete assigned tasks
    • Occasional squatting, twisting, climbing, and balancing to inspect assigned areas
    • Frequently crouch, squat, bend, twist, and kneel in awkward confined spaces; frequently climb equipment, trenches, and 45-foot ladders through 24-inch diameter manholes
    • Frequent light and firm grasp to properly use tools and equipment; occasional fine manipulation use to perform office duties;
    • Occasional step up and down to enter and exit vehicles and climb ladders up to 45 feet;
    • Constant near and far acuity and hearing to safely perform duties
    • Occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds from ground to waist to move manhole covers; occasional lifting of up to eighty (80) pounds from ground to shoulder to move cement bags and equipment, and occasional lifting of forty (40) pounds overhead; occasional carrying and pushing and pulling of up to 100 pounds twenty (20) feet to lift and move manhole covers

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Work is constantly performed indoors and outdoors with constant exposure to extreme temperatures. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near moving mechanical parts and high-speed rotating equipment; work is performed in high and precarious places with exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes, and/or airborne particles.

    Required Materials and Equipment
    Operates light equipment such as hand and power tools, gas detectors, air compressors, air blowers, tripods, vacuums, mops, floor machines, brooms, and cleaning materials and agents. Depending on the project, may also utilize small tools such as hammers, shovels, saws, measuring tape, levels, drills, and power tools to complete assigned responsibilities.

    Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen. There may be additional pre-employment requirements depending on the nature of the position.
