    (Job #543609) Student Support Professionals II, EOP Academic Advisor, Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Educational Opportunity Program Department.     Position Summary:

    Under the general supervision of the Director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the incumbent advises nontraditional students (limited income, first generation) who are eligible for EOP, assesses the need for academic support services, and monitors the progress of an assigned caseload of students. The incumbent works closely with faculty and other university offices to accomplish program goals.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Advising - 35%

    Utilizes basic counseling techniques to provide advisement to students who need financial, career, academic and personal advising services. Assists students in choosing, pursuing, or adjusting to suitable educational and vocational goals. Provides detailed information on academic policies and regulations, general education requirements, graduation requirements, and academic support services. Assesses eligibility of entering students for program services and provides information on eligibility requirements.

    Provides advising to an assigned caseload of program students:
    Provides academic advising, designed to assist students who may be academically underprepared to meet general education and/or major requirements. Assists with major selection, registration, course scheduling, academic progress requirements; provides information on university regulations, procedures, and deadline dates. Interprets and utilizes university, CSU and national admissions and placement test scores and academic records in the advising process and in helping students alleviate skill deficiencies; provides follow-up with students on academic probation and those not meeting academic progress requirements. Provides personal advising to assist students in finding alternatives to deal with family and personal problems, loneliness, cultural isolation and transitional academic adjustment. Provides basic crisis intervention and makes referrals when appropriate. Provides career and employment referral for part-time, summer and/or permanent employment and provides assistance with career decision making; helps students apply and gain admission to graduate and professional programs. Offers financial aid advising, including assistance with application forms, financial planning and budgeting, and assistance in meeting academic progress requirements for various student aid programs. Also assists students who have not met financial aid progress requirements to resolve deficiencies and maintain aid eligibility. Provides information regarding a wide range of federal and state aid regulations regarding application and eligibility. Provides housing assistance, information on cultural and social activities, health and legal referrals, and referrals to other campus and community departments and agencies.
    Provides orientation for new students and gives information on program regulations and services and general information about the university and community in addition to the services detailed above.

    Acts as an advocate for non-traditional students where typical guidelines and solutions are not available or are not adequate; meets with individuals or groups to define areas of concern and plan appropriate actions. Assesses student needs, identifies problems common to program students, identifies institutional barriers and designs appropriate interventions and solutions; helps determine campus services and resources to be provided to individuals or groups of students.

    Provides ongoing assessment of the needs of program students. When needs are identified, develops and offers special workshops or support sessions to meet specific needs. When appropriate, collaborates with other student service or academic programs and offices to develop, provide, and/or modify services.

    Maintains complete and accurate records on students served and specific services or referrals provided and reports this information as needed. Maintains records on student academic progress and persistence and conducts regular needs assessment of all assigned students.

    Assessment - 25%

    Assesses and adapts services or programs to the needs of academically and culturally diverse students. Interprets and applies state and federal program regulations in providing appropriate services.

When appropriate, collaborates with other student service or academic programs and offices to develop, provide, and/or modify services.

    Programming Support - 30%

    Provides support in coordinating new student orientations and other transition services for new program students.

    Provides lead support in coordinating, planning, training of Peer Mentors and Peer Advisors.

    Provides lead support in coordinating and facilitating Transfer student orientation, workshops, and seminar.

    Provides lead support in developing and facilitating workshop presentations to current and prospective students.

    Participates in the development, administration, analysis, and reporting of program evaluation and performance outcomes.

    Participates in various program social, cultural, and educational activities designed to improve student performance and persistence.

    Serves on various campus committees, as related to EOP admissions and academic services - 5%

    Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

    As listed in the Classification Standards:
    • Must have knowledge of principles and practices of academic and financial aid advising.
    • Must have general knowledge of university services and other resources, especially those frequently utilized by the target population.
    • Must demonstrate ability to interpret and apply regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse population both verbally and in writing.
    • Additional consideration is given to applicants who have overcome barriers similar to those confronting program participants.

    As related to the major responsibilities for this position:

    Equipment used in the performance of the assignment:
    • Ability to learn and use software applications like Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint, PeopleSoft, and basic office equipment.

    Specific physical and/or environmental working conditions:
    • Ability to work in an office setting that provides a confidential workspace to meet with students and staff. Needs to be able to be at a desk for long periods of time, to do computer work, communicate orally with staff and students, read, write, comprehend, analyze and make decisions .
    • Extended and weekend hours are sometimes required during peak work periods.

    In addition to the Knowledge and Abilities of SSP I-A and SSP I-B, the following are required:
    • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned
    • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques.
    • General knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
    • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
    • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
    • Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews.
    • Ability to reason logically.
    • Ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
    • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
    • Ability to recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
    • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population both verbally and in writing.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    Experience:
    Possession of the below knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
    Education:
    Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    At least one semester of education or specialized training related to working with the target population. Two years of professional experience in academic advisement or mentoring at the professional or paraprofessional level with limited-income, first-generation and/or underrepresented college students. Knowledge of academic support services for underrepresented college students. At least one semester professional experience working in a college setting with students who are from a diverse range of cultural and economic backgrounds is preferred. Any amount of experience, both professional or volunteer of advising experience in a college setting is preferred. Any amount of experience, both professional or volunteer in helping students from a diverse range of cultural and economic backgrounds and have knowledge of issues facing non-traditional college students.
