    POSITION OVERVIEW

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Terminal Management exists to deliver a 5-star experience for all passengers travelling through Houston’s airports. This experience includes all Guest facing services from the time a passenger enters the airport facility to the time they depart on an aircraft and vice versa. The scope of Terminal Management’s responsibility includes aesthetic appearance, functional condition of airport facilities and amenities, operational readiness and terminal ambiance. Terminal Management is the primary liaison with airlines, federal agencies and any Guest facing service provider at the airports as well as with Skytrax, an organization that rates airlines and airports worldwide and is the inspiration for the Houston Airport System’s mission of becoming a 5-star global air service gateway where the magic of flight is celebrated.

    The purpose of this position is to ensure airlines and customers are granted proper access to common use facilities including aircraft parking, ticket counters, gate check-in podiums and baggage carousels in accordance with established policy while providing exceptional internal and external customer service. Gate Control serves as a coordination center to facilitate all common use facilities in Terminal A, D and FIS by utilizing various forms of communications equipment such as phones, radios, cameras, and software. Gate control serves a wide scope of internal and external customers including, but not limited to the airlines, regulatory agencies, tenants, and contractors.

    The responsibilities of the Senior Airport Communications Operator include but are not limited to:

    • Handles most serious requests and emergencies. Functions as a lead during emergency situations.
    • Trains telecommunicators on routine functions in the communications center. Provides relief and assists telecommunicators in resolving problems with equipment.
    • Operates the airport telephone exchange system to provide customers information on airline arrivals and/or departures, traffic, parking, service complaints, lost luggage/passengers, directions, and emergencies. Maintains daily log of calls.
    • Receives and directs public distress calls for lost and locked vehicles, tows, stuck elevators, and maintenance calls for airport injuries, parking meters, ticket spitters, traffic signs and traffic, and weather conditions.
    • Broadcasts information to appropriate airport/tenant personnel on aircraft emergencies, bomb threats, hazardous conditions, and major natural disasters. May provide prearrival instructions to callers. Maintains a log of emergency activity during shift.
    • Enters domestic and international airline schedules into an information display system. Reviews and updates daily flight data, aircraft gate and baggage carousel assignments, and schedule changes.
    • Monitors access control systems to ensure no unauthorized access to Aircraft Operating Areas (AOA) and other security areas by the public, employees, or tenants of the airport. Notifies appropriate authorities of civil defense alerts.
    • Relays information and calls to appropriate personnel for repair service regarding malfunctioning access card readers, broken access gates, building, and street lighting, pipes, toilets, and sinks. Updates maintenance tracking system.
    • Tests and initiates work orders for repair of communication and alarm equipment and backup systems to ensure serviceability.
    • Ensures field reports concerning emergency activity are routed to appropriate personnel.


    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or extensive use of a video display terminal. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or a GED.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    Two years of experience in a major airport terminal handling a variety of communication activities or in a related major facility handling a variety of communications equipment are required.

    PREFERENCES

    A minimum of an Associate degree in an Aviation field is preferred. Prior experience in a fast-paced airline or airport environment working with customers and irregular operations and changing flight schedules. Should be detailed oriented, ability to multi-task, work with no supervision, good decision making, creative thought process, and able to work with various levels of management within the airport and airlines.

    **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **
